We have tree swallows in our bird box in the side yard. They are wonderful to watch. The parents fly in the sky above looking for insects and then swoop down to the box to feed.

Wonderful work that you are doing in California to bring back the swallows. Noticed a lot of people were having problems with sparrows nesting in the boxes. The damage that can be caused by these non native english house sparrows is huge. Do not let sparrows nest in your swallow, purple martin or bluebird boxes. For info to help ID a house sparrow from other types of sparrows visit http://purplemartins-r-us.com/threats-t-6.html and look in the articles that interest you. Sparrows can and will kill both the baby swallows and adults. If you are interested in martins and swallows in general, check out http://purplemartins-r-us.com for info on purple martins

We live on a small lake, and put up a martin house, on a pole with a predator baffle, early June of last year. Tree swallows looked it over, but no nesting until this year. A pair of tree swallows nested this year, with lots of regular visiting by other pairs.
There were at least four young, we were looking forward to watching them after they'd left the nest. But, overnight the parents and young vanished. They were there July 4, and gone July 5. Since then we haven't seen any swallows at all, it's as if they all left the area. Earlier we had seen as many as six adults at a time. Is this normal?

We had never even seen a tree swallow until now. We put out a new box and right away a pair of tree swallows started to look it over. They have built a nest and are now sitting on eggs. Can't wait to see the babies. We spend a lot of time on the back porch just watching them.

I lucked into having a pair of Tree Swallows nest in a Bluebird box about 3 years ago. No Bluebirds but plenty of House Sparrows to contend with. Now I put out boxes just for the Tree Swallows and they return every year. Would like to know if putting 2 boxes side by side could attract 2 pair of Tree Swallows.
