I was in Attack Squadron VA-163. I joined USS Oriskany in Subic Bay a couple days "after" the explosion aboard the ship, on October 28, 1966. Arrived back in San Diego November 16, 1966. My home base was NAS Lemoore, California. I next deployed on USS Oriskany CVA-34 (1967-1968) cruise. Rear Admiral George S. Morrison, (father of the late Jim Morrison of the Doors) was commander of the fleet. Was on station in the Tonkin Gulf on the Oriskany July 29, 1967, when the USS Forrestal suffered its explosions that resulted in fatalities.

It's hard to believe all this time has passed, since our duty out in the "Gulf"! I must say that I have fond memories of my time overseas. Guess my favorite port was Olongapo, where else? Did things there that most guys only dream of. I hung out at the Queen Bee Club, Oro Club (at the end of Magsaysay street on the right), or at the Hong Kong Club (about a mile down after turning right at the Oro Club)?

I also enjoyed Yokosuka, Sasebo, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. I did not care much for Singapore. Anyway, the Navy was very good to me. Just did not realize at the time how well I had it. The best liberty that anyone could ever find anywhere. Subic Bay and Olongapo City was unreal.

Your web site is very well done. Great Work!

My grandfather was a sailor on this ship. I was just wondering if anyone on this website knew him. He was on the ship from 1950-1954.
His name was Jack Cuccolino.
Unfortunatly, he passed away in May 1997. I was only 7 years old at the time and he was not able to really tell me much of his life. Now I am in college, and i would like to know if anyone out there remembers him or how he was back then. If there is anything anyone can remember about him, please e-mail me and my mother, his daughter back at Manduhbabi188@gmail.com
I want to learn more about who he was.
Thank you so much.

My uncle Robin Cassell served on the Oriskany during the 66 and 67 WestPac cruises with the VA-152. His A1H Skyraider was shot down on July 15, 1967 during a daytime reconaissance mission over the Gulf of Tonkin. Since I never got to meet him I would be interested in hearing from others who knew him and served with him. This year marks the 40th anniversary of his death. He would have turned 65 on Dec 6 of this year.
Last year, I sailed my boat past the Hornet at Alameda NAS with my father. For the first time, he spoke of his brother and he told me stories of the 66 fire that his brother had told him.
Thanks for the site.

I served onboard Oriskany from 6/67 to 2/68. I was a plane captain attached to VF-162. I was recently on the USS Oriskany website and learned that the Mighty O will become an artificial reef next month. The website has many links to the ships crew and the squadrons that served on board. The 1967 cruise is still quite vivid in my memory. I remember Lt. Richard Minnich's lost on Jan4, 68. Also, John McCain's shoot down in October. The day that Lt.Wyman returned to the ship after his Mig 17 shoot down. He was the last to come aboard that day preceded by CAL Swanson our CO. I was on the flight deck when they returned and they were extremely excited. Lt. Wyman could hardly speak getting out of his F8.
Some of my old buddies were, Bush, Schwanke, Hay,Corder, Rindy, Michalak, Little Bush, Mal Sanford, Gene Durkee.
Almost 40 years have passed but the memories and names are still fresh in my mind.

There was a question on this site asking whatever happened to Cmdr Bellinger. I read that he recently died in a nursing home.

My stepfather who is pretty much my father, Jack Greenwood, served on the Oriskany in the R division from 64-67. I was looking to see if I could find anyone he was stationed with. I know he was looking for a buddy of his named Mel Davis awhile back and couldn't find him. Feel free to drop me a line if you know my dad or know of him.

I was in OI div for the 1965&66 cruises. When the fire started I was on duty on the Admirals Bridge. I left the ship the first wk of April 1967. I went back to Indy and stayed in the reserves for a year. I also went to work for AT$T/ Ind Bell. I am still working for AT$T. I will have 37 years service, in April 04. I would like to hear from any of my old ship mates. I was watching discovery ch and caught the story about the Oriskany fire. It brought back so many memories.
