Re: More Hancock Baptism questions

Hi Maxine,

I am going to say completly discard the 2nd message you posted as you were NOT using the correct way to search. That is why you were pulling up different churches.

It will take me some time to search the original material looking for errors in our transcription.

On the search page just below the search bar there is information re the () or [] it should have an "I" in the center of them telling you that there is more information that we have not transcribed.

Now to find the original material.

Elaine in Ottawa.

PS might I suggest you check out FreeBMD and see if you can spot Teresa.

Re: More Hancock Baptism questions

Hi Maxine

These are Roman Catholic baptisms, so the names are in Latin. eg Joannes is Latin for John. Thomae is Latin for Thomas.

The closed brackets after Thomae represent the field where any fathers occupation would appear.

Just the brackets () mean no fathers occupation was provided.

Re: More Hancock Baptism questions

Hi Maxine,

I have just searched 20 years of material for the Baptism originals that we used to transcribe St Maries RC Church. And no joy I am afraid.

However I have checked the transcriptions for Joannes(John) Hancoc on page 103
and Teresia Noon on page 111.

Both pages were transcribed by two different transcribers and both were excellent.

John Hancock was registered and on the GRO index. March qtr 1908 Sheffield 9c 599 MMN McGuire.

Teresia Noon-Hancock was not listed at the GRO in 1908.

Sorry but thats as far as I can go.

Elaine in Ottawa.

Re: More Hancock Baptism questions

"also in the Godparents line it has Emma Hill for Joannes ( we have a John Hancock born that day could this be Johnathan abbreviated?) and Maria Noon for Teresia, can you tell me what these names may mean or are they godparents?"

I believe Emma Hill and Maria Noon must be godparents.

Re: More Hancock Baptism questions

Hi Maxine,

You will be pleased to note I have found the ORIGINAL material for the 1908 Baptisms at St Marie's RC Church.

Page 111 . 1904-1924
It reads. Hancock 26 River Lane.
Teresia Hancock DOB 19/05/1899
Bap 23/05/1908
Godparent Maria Noon

Our error will change the database. I apologuise.

Elaine in Ottawa.
