Ronald Biggins born 1930, I believe his parents are George William Biggins b 1888 died 1968 and Lucy Elizabeth 1897 to 1965 (nee Bell)
I believe I have found the burials on this site at Shiregreen Cemetery.
However, I am struggling to find a marriage of a George William Biggins to Lucy Elizabeth Bell and I am wondering if Lucy had married previously and therefore the marriage to George would be under that name of The name of Biggins has been indexed wrongly.
Ronald Biggins married Betty Bell in 1954 and I am sure Betty and Lucy are relatives somehow but as yet don't know.
Any help please on tracing the marriage of Ronald's parents would be appreciated. It could well be me having a senior moment and it has been standing right out in front of me..
The 1939 register has Ronald living with George W. Biggins and Elizabeth Biggins at 122 Southey Hill. Could Lucy Elizabeth and Betty be one and the same person? A late marriage for whatever reason?
I spent ages trying to find a marriage for two of my ancestors in the run up to the birth of their eldest son in 1825. Turned out they only tied the knot in 1851…
No worries Heather obviously senior moments are contagious.
No betty was born in 1934 and Lucy born 1897. It might be just a pure coincidence that they shared the same surname, nevertheless struggling to find marriage of Ronald's parents.
Looking back at the 1939 register there are 4 children living with George and Elizabeth. One of them, Kenneth, has DOB 13-Aug-1924.
He seems to have been baptized at St Stephen Netherthorpe on 17-Sep-1924 as Kenneth Bell, not Kenneth Biggins. Date of birth on the baptism tallies with the one on the 1939 census. Parents names George &Elizabeth and father’s trade auger filer also look right. So it looks like George must have married Elizabeth Bell after September 1924.
There are 4 sons on that 1939 Register entry all named Biggins. They are John b 1929, William b 1923, Kenneth b 1924 and Ronald b 1930. Each has a matching record in GRO Index but they are all confused around the Bell and Biggin names
John is Bell, no mmn probably correct
William is Bell , mmn Biggins
Kenneth is Bell mmn Biggins
Ronald is Biggins mmn Bell probably correct
The first 2 are available as £3 digital images and the third as £8 pdf.
A small investment seems in order.
It seems that George Biggins and Elizabeth Bell got together at least 4 times but when it came to registration someone was very confused, at least for William and Kenneth.
There is definitely no registered marriage
Dave
Thanks folks yes I agree it is very confusing and yes I think the marriage to Bertha Carter in 1911 is correct. If you look on the 1921 census Bertha and George are classed as married but are not living together.
To make matters more confusing a brother of Lucy Elizabeth Bell called William married a Doris Biggins. Need to find who the father of Doris (dorris) is and is she related to george William.
Thanks Dave, no wonder I could not find The Biggins family when indexed as Bell.
I wonder if he divorced Bertha or perhaps Bertha was up to no good.
Going to see if Bertha was connected somehow and did George and Bertha have kids. If not I wonder if that is why he hooked up with Elizabeth so he could pass on his genes.
Bertha Biggins outlived both of them. There is no marriage for Biggins to Bell because that would have been the criminal offence of bigamy on his part. Adultery is not now, and never has been, a criminal offence
In those days divorce was for the rich only. Less than 1 in every 100 marriages ended in divorce.
