James & Mary Elizabeth Whiteley 1851 Census

Hello ,

I am looking for the 1851 Census for the following family ( my great x 4 grandparents) they moved from the Hull area to Sheffield .

In 1861 they lived on Ball Street North , Sheffield

James Whiteley age 39 Head

Mary Elizabeth Whiteley (nee Hood) age 39

Richard Henry Whiteley (son) age 15

Mary Ann Whiteley (daughter) age 12

Martha Whiteley (daughter) age 9

Please note on the 1861 Census they are recorded and transcribed as Wheatley .

I ordered James and Mary's marriage certificate , they married on March 4th 1844 at St Mary's Church in the parish of Sculcoates , recorded as of full age . James' profession as a blacksmith (he is often recoded as an engine smith on later census)

I thought the certificate might help me find their 1851 location , it still might , but no joy yet . Their residence at the time of marriage is recorded as Cumberland Street (now a main road in Hull but at that time known as Sculcoates )

I've not had any joy trying to find the census for Cumberland Street despite having Ancestry access but this would be one option .

I'm looking for the family of four in Sculcoates / Hull

Any help appreciated thankyou

Peter

Re: James & Mary Elizabeth Whiteley 1851 Census

I've found Richard Henry Whiteley's baptism of 12th October 1845 in the parish of St Mark , Hull where their address is recorded as Jenning Street.

Re: James & Mary Elizabeth Whiteley 1851 Census

I've found Mary Ann Whiteley's baptism of June 4th 1848 , service also conducted at St Marks , Hull with address recorded as 16 Nelson Street .

I was looking for those with an abode of Nelson Street. For each couple with that address I searched the 1851 census, Hull Yokshire.

You would expect at least some of them to still be living in Hull for the 1851 census. I could find none of the children or their parents living in Hull.

I have seen other names in the census with Nelson Street as an address. But No 16 is not in that batch.

I suspect part of Nelson Street was omitted from the 1851 census, or more likely, the relevant pages have not survived.

Re: James & Mary Elizabeth Whiteley 1851 Census

Thanks for your help Terry , you've gotten further than me . I saw the three addresses are in quite close proximity .

Re: James & Mary Elizabeth Whiteley 1851 Census

There are no Whiteley's living at number 16 Nelson Street on the 51 Census or at any of the addresses on Cumberland Street, there is also a location on Cumberland Street named Nelson's Place with several properties alas no James Whiteley.
I have the 1851 Census disk for Sculcoats and can see why it's so confusing to search! Whoever scanned the census pages cut off a lot of the folio numbers.

Re: James & Mary Elizabeth Whiteley 1851 Census

There ia one piece of Manchester 1851 census with no folio numbers (for Hulme). It may be worth asking East Yorkshire FHS what they know about this one.
