I have so much information but can't put it all together in the right order! I am actually looking for a record of my Great Great Grandfather and GMother's wedding. Christchurch Pitsmoor 10th April 1870. Any information about any of theses or other distant relatives Michael and Maria Merlino of Copper Street Sheffield. Ice Cream people. All my Sheffield relatives never seemed to move and were born, lived and died in Sheffield. I have scoured the genealogy websites and just need more. Anyone know anything extra or maybe even a photo or two!
TIA
On 18th February 1920, Italian ice-cream dealer Margil Merlino, of 42 Scotland street, was fined £10 on a charge of keeping an automatic machine at his premises for gaming purposes. The machine was mostly used by 10-15 year olds, and after inserting a halfpenny, a ball was sent round the outer circle and had a chance of releasing three other balls and giving back a penny. P.C.Skelton observed about a dozen children using the machine, and tried his luck 7 times but without success. Merlino's wife, Mary, was also charged, but was dismissed as she was acting under her husband's influence.
In April 1920 there was a hold up at Gibraltar street Post Office. At the trial of the culprits, Philomena Merlino, aged 12 of 42 Scotland street, testified that on 15th April the three men walked into her father's shop and bought a packet of cigarettes. One of them showed Philomena the card and asked her "Can you read?" - she answered "I can't. I'm cleaning windows". The man then said " If you don't I'll push the ladder over". Philomena was scared and came down and into the shop, where she was followed by the three men. They tried to sell some oil cloth to Mrs Melino, but she refused. A little later Philomena heard her mother scream, and looking out of an upstairs window saw the three men running away.

You don't give the names of your Great Great Grandfather and GMother but there is a marriage record for a John Denton to Annie Shannon 10 April 1870, Pitsmoor on this site in the Parish Records section - Marriages from the menu on the left.
Theres also a marriage for a Joseph Merlino (father Michael) and a number of Merlino Baptism and Burial records.
As you say you have a lot of information you may have these records already.
If its more memories/photos info you're looking for you might be as well to post on Sheffield Forum, as that has a wider Sheffield-based audience.

This is crazy! I actually went to find the graves of a couple of ancestors today, but they are truly overgrown. I will be going back to St Michaels RC for the gravestones of Michael and Maria Merlino. Also their son Anthony. My Grandmother is Nellie Hill and her sister Ethel married the Italian son, Joseph Merlino (melino)
I also tried to find John Charles Hill who was my grandmother's brother, at Christ Church Stannington. He died aged 7. She always said he ate poison berries. Not sure how true it was! There are very many graves, either unmarked or broken into disrepair. So I struggled but had a great time searching. Thanks for the information though.
Thankyou Denise. This is really helpful. My Grandmother is Nellie Hill
Her mother is Amy Hill nee Denton and Father Herbert HIll.
Amy's Mother is, your'e quite right, Annie Shannon and John Denton
After this, I think....Ann Shannon's Father is Thomas Shannon and Mother Ann Shannon.
Im not really sure about the last bit. More to do. But I am hopefully going to try and get over to Sheffield to search any archives I can find.
I think I am hooked!
Hi Fiona,
If you look over to the and back to the Parish Register we have transcribed, there are 35 Shannon Baptisms and 44 Marriages in our extensive database. Over two million entries.I did not check the deaths.
The material we transcribe is all from Sheffield Archives so you may not need to travel to Sheffield. It's one of the reasons I started the site way back in 2000.

How do I look?
Over to the left.
You can see a picture of Sheffield Cathedral in the later 1800's.
There is a list below it. The ninth one down is Parish Registers.
The next page gives you option of baptism and marriages at the top of the page.
Choose one and just put in Annie's name.
I have a feeling that some folks are just downloading the Forum and missing out on all the transcriptions we have completed.
Elaine.
Brilliant. Thanks so much.

Fiona, the burial of your John Charles Hill (on FMP) was on 24 August 1918 at Christ Church Stannington. He was one month short of his 8th Birthday and he died at Hollins Croft.
Are you familiar with the GRO Index website? On there you can find his official Death registration. That record will contain the definitive cause of his death. On that GRO website you can order his record as a Digital Image at a cost of a mere £3 and the record becomes available online immediately after you pay.
