Re: Arnold eccles

Possibly this record at the GRO to refine the possible dates
SPYE, ARNOLD Mother’s maiden name: -
GRO Reference: 1898 March Quarter in ECCLESALL BIERLOW Volume 09C Page 401

Re: Arnold eccles

There is potential confusion with another Arnold:
Arnold Eccles, 1897 Jun quarter 1897, mother Meeke.
Baptised St Anne Netherthorpe 12 May 1897. Parents Frank & Mary Hannah Eccles, 66 Shepherd Street, bricklayer. Probably RNVR WW1 10970 born 24 April 1897.

Re: Arnold eccles

Not sure if you have this info. I've found a marriage for Annie Eliza to Edwin Eccles in 1894 but from the censuses I've found it appears that they don't live together. in 1901 Annie with children Annie b 1895 and Arnold b 1898 are with her brother Arthur and his family and Edwin is a boarder with a family called Hall.
In 1911 Edwin (married) is still not with Annie. I can't find her in 1911.

Found a burial for Annie Eliza Eccles in 1920 which states she is the wife of Edwin Eccles.

Hope this is the correct family.

Re: Arnold eccles

Appears there was another son Sidney b 1910.

All the children were in and out of the workhouse.

Re: Arnold eccles

The 1910 and 1911 workhouse admission records say that he was legitimate.

Re: Arnold eccles

She also had George in 1903 , died 1903, and Lily in 1907, died 1908.

Re: Arnold eccles

I am aware of children in a family in Melbourne Australia of the 1870s whose "father" named in the birth registration was the mother's husband who had been absent for many years.

I am also aware of a widow in New Zealand whose child was born several years after the death of her husband. Could not find a matching birth registration though. The jump to a conclusion was wrong. She had simply taken in the child of a single mother and treated her as her own.

Re: Arnold Eccles

"In 1911 Edwin (married) is still not with Annie. I can't find her in 1911."

In 1911 there is this possibility:
Ecclesall Bierlow Union Workhouse
Eliza Eccles
Inmate
Age 37 = abt1874
Married 12 years =abt 1899
Children 4
Living children 3,
Children died 1
Charwoman
Born Yorks Sheffield
1042 people there!
Age & married years aren’t quite as expected for the target. How is the child count? How good were institutions with such details?

Re: Arnold eccles

Hi Heather where would I find the workhouse admission registers

FindMyPast.co.uk has 12 hits for Arnold Eccles born 1898 workhouse admission records "exclusive". I don't subscribe so can't help further.

Re: Arnold eccles

And for Annie E/Elizabeth born 1875/76 and a namesake born 1894.

Re: Arnold eccles

The Ecclesall Bierlow workhouse admission records on FMP aren’t that informative. They don’t show the original images, and just give Arnold’s name, his DOB, the admission dates, occupation (either blank, or “legitimate”) and the source and document reference number. You’d have to view the original documents at Sheffield archives.

Reference numbers are:

NHS21/5/6/1 pages 59, 61
NHS21/5/6/2 pages 68, 69, 71

Re: Arnold eccles

The Ecclesall Bierlow Workhouse Register transcriptions on FMP give a lot of details about the admissions of Annie Eliza and her children:
2 March 1903 Annie Eliza b 1875 and her daughter Aniie E(1895) and son Arnold (1898) admitted
(Note George Eccles mmn Slye born in March 1903 and died Sept 1903. This from GRO Index)
17 Oct 1904 Annie Eliza b 1875 and son Arnold admitted
12 Oct 1906 Ditto ditto
1 June 1907 Lily Eccles born and admitted, ie born in Workhouse
( Note Lily died age 1 in 1908 from GROIndex)
21 Jan 1910 Annie E b 1875 and son Arnold Admitted
22Apr 1910 Sydney Eccles born and Admitted
23March 1911 Sydney Eccles admitted
(Note 1911 Census on 2 Apr 1911 Annie E and sons Arnold and Sydney all in the Workhouse)
18 Dec 1911 Annie E and sons Arnold and Sydney admitted

Re: Arnold eccles

Just looked at the records for the other children. Sidney was also legitimate but it says Lily was illegitimate.

Re: Arnold eccles

Looks like Arnold’s birth was registered as Spye, rather than Eccles.

Re: Arnold eccles

when and where did Arnold marry? Could it have been just before he married that he was baptised?

Re: Arnold eccles

Edwin Eccles is on the 1911 census and he has filled out his marriage and children situation. He says he was married for 16 yrs (that fits) and there was only one child from the marriage and that child was still alive. There is no doubt that Ann E born 1895 was his because he is named as father on the baptism. So that is a clear indication that he did not accept any of his wife’s subsequent children were his. Therefore they must all be illegitimate by definition. I assume therefore he must not be named on any of their birth registrations.

Re: Arnold eccles

Edwin Eccles marriage is on this site, I did a bit of research for a friend on the White side of his family mainly for Croxford his grandfather, he knew the Eccles side of the family from Cuthbert Bank.
