Timothy Utley occupation on MC

Timothy Utley married in 1860 to Harriet Kelsey and I am trying to work out his occupation.

All the census returns for him state he was a Hammerman now is ths job the same as what it says on the marriage certificate?

I have only found him to 1871 and FMP for that year have him at Hutley can anyone find him in 1881 etc please?

I few years ago on this forum someone suggested that he died in 1895 in Keighley area and his wife was called Hannah This death I am ruling out as in 1856 there was a Timothy Utley marriage to a Hannah and this Timothy was born much earlier.

If anyone can assist me that would be appreciated.

When time permits, I shall see if I can find the birth n the GRO of a child of Timothy and Harriet and see who regitered that birth.

Regards

John

Have you tried using wildcards when searching in censuses on FMP?

Is this your couple?

FamilySearch transcription of the 23 Sep 1860 marriage at Kimberworth says the occupation is Shingler; father David a collier. Harriet Kelsey’s father John Kelsey an Over Looker. You might be able to view an original at a Family Search Centre or an affiliate library.

Re: Timothy Utley occupation on MC

At Ancestry for 1881 I can’t find any Tim* born Yorkshire 1839 +/- 2 years anywhere in England with a surname that looks anything like Uttley or even a garbled version of it.

In 1881 Harriet Uttley 38 “married” at 41 Shaftsbury Sq, born Leeds.
Children Mary J 19, Edwin 17, Joshua 6, William 4. Also Edward Poole, lodger, Unm 32 born Salop, Madeley, Labourer Iron Works.

In 1891 Harriet is a Widow at 139 Eastwood Lane. Edward Poole is still boarding with the family. Plus Joshua & William & Thersa Thorn a niece.

Mary Jane Uttley married 18 December 1881 St Stephen Eastwood. To Charles Sales. Father Timothy Uttley, Shingler.

Re: Timothy Utley occupation on MC

Terry, once again thanks for your assistance, in 1881 Shaftsbury square was that in Rotherham area?

What is a shingler?

Obviously then Timothy was up to no good so did a vanishing act.

Re: Timothy Utley occupation on MC

A shingler was the man in charge of a tilt-hammer. In 1881 Harriet Uttley was at 41 Shaftsbury Square, Rotherham (next to where the Leisure complex is now) with children Edwin (17) William (4) and Mary J (19), status "married" but husband not present. In 1891 she was a widowed midwife at 139 Eastwood Lane with sons Joshua (16) and William (14). Harriet was buried at Moorgate Cemetery, Rotherham on 19th August 1918 (aged 76).

In July 1866 four agents of the Provincial Union Assurance Company were in court accused of conspiracy to defraud the society. Harriet Uttley, wife of Timothy Uttley, of New Rotherham, said her husband held a policy in the Provincial. One of the defendants (Hird) came to them about the first. She could not read but saw her husband sign it. At the same proceedings Hannah Kelsey, wife of John Kelsey, testified that Hird had called on her husband for his premiums and had later brought a proposal for herself, which she could not read, and was transferred to various other societies.

In November 1866 Timothy was accused of doing a moonlight flit and fraudulently taking some articles from the house. (case dismissed)

Ted, marvellous find thank you, looks like we will never know when Tim died then. Will have a study

Re: Timothy Utley occupation on MC

New Rotherham was the name given to development north of Howard Street, Rotherham. There had been some restrictive covenant preventing this before the Earl of Effingham acquired a local act of parliament in the early 1850s. It included Shaftesbury Square which was in the angle between Effingham Street and St. Ann's Road. See

This is the near the Don Bridge, leading to Parkgate and Rawmarsh where they lived previously.

Re: Timothy Utley occupation on MC

Thank you Sally, my relatives lived the parkgate, rawmarsh area and some still do but there are not many of them left now that I can ask questions too. It would be nice to find the death of Timothy but with what went on I doubt we will. Will have to trace another member of that family. Rebecca, his sister, is the link so know about her.

Re: Timothy Utley occupation on MC

The marriage original is on Findmypast which I think you have. Both being resident in Kimberworth suggests one at least may have been living in Masbrough, before being in Rawmarsh the next year for the census. Kimberworth would have been the parish church for the whole area north of the River Don until St. John's Masnrough was opened in 1864.
