Sheffield Independent 26 March 1895

Strange suicide of a lad at Brightholmlee.
Considerable surprise has been caused at Brightholmlee, near Bradfield, by the suicide of Harvey Beevers, a farm servant, aged 16 years. The deceased was employed by Mr. John Hudson, farmer, of Brightholmlee, and lived on the premises. He was last seen alive on Sunday morning, when he went into a storeroom with some bones. Half an hour later Mr. Hudson’s daughter Florence, having occasion to go into the room, found Beevers suspended from the ceiling by a piece of rope fastened round his neck. She raised an alarm, but he was found to be dead when cut down. As the deceased was a steady lad, worked well, and did not appear to be in trouble, no reason is known why he has taken his life. An inquest will be held on Wednesday.

PS - the Sheffield Evening Telegraph of the same date has a slightly different version:

Suicide of a Lad
A sad case of hanging happened early on Sunday morning at Hobb Lane Farm, near Brightholmlee. The farm is occupied by Mr John Hudson. A lad in his employ, 15, went out to feed some cattle. Not returning in time for breakfast, a search was made for him, and he was found hanging in one of the outbuildings quite dead. The lad’s home is at Bromley, near Rotherham. An inquest will be held tomorrow.

Finally! found the report of the inquest.

The suicide of a boy at Brightholmlee. Dread of an operation

Mr D. Wightman, coroner, held an inquiry yesterday at the Blue Ball Inn, Wharncliffe Side, into the circumstances attending the death of Harvey Beevers, farm servant. Mr Beilby, superintendent of the West Riding Constabulary, was present at the inquiry. The deceased who was 16 years of age had been in the employment of Mr John Hudson, farmer of Hob lane, Brightholmlee, Bradfield, with whom he lived. He was the son of Joseph Beevers, quarry man of Bramley near Rotherham, who identified the body, and said he knew of no reason for his son committing suicide.
Miss Florence Hudson said the deceased appeared quite cheerful and healthy, and on Sunday morning he went about his work as usual. She last saw him alive about half past eight when he brought the milk. An hour after, having occasion to go into the storeroom she found Beevers suspended by a rope from the ceiling. She told her father who cut the deceased down, but he was dead then.
In answer to the Coroner, witness said deceased appeared to have tied two pieces of rope together, and standing on a ginger beer box had fastened one end of the rope to a hook and the other round his neck and jumped off the box. His feet just touched the ground, but not enough to support him. Witness did not know of his being in any trouble elsewhere. He was in none there because he worked well, and was liked and cared for..
A juryman said during the week Beevers had told him his toe was very sore, having been hurt 10 months ago. He was afraid he would have to go into the Infirmary and have it taken off.
The father said he thought that would account for his committing suicide. A few years ago his cousin was in the Infirmary, through his finger being hurt and underwent an operation but lockjaw set in and he died. He thought the deceased had been afraid the operation would have the same effect on him and it had affected his mind causing him to take his life. The jury returned a verdict of suicide during a state of temporary insanity. At the close of the inquiry the jury expressed their regret at the occurrence and their sympathy with Mr Hudson and the deceased’s family.
