John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

John Tingle married Ann Windle on 3rd Dec 1838 at Bolton on Dearne. John was 21 and Ann was 26.

They had three children that I know of Hannah b 1839 Charles b 1841 and Martha 1843.

I am trying to find this family on the 1841 census to see where John and Ann were born but as yet I am unable to do so, which leads me to this either the pages are missing or the names have been transcribed wrongly due to poor quality writing.

If anyone can enlighten me on where they are it would be appreciated.

Regards

John

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

Have you tried the 1851 census or later censuses

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

What search criteria are you using as they came up straight away on the 1841 census for me?

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

I used John Tingle b 1812, I shall try again though.

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

found in 1841 John was given as aged 20, forgot about the rounding down. not yet found on the 1851 census.

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

So, what criteria are you using for the 1851 search ?

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

the same as for 1841, I even tried hannah but nothing.

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

So widen you're search criteria in terms of birth date and location. If you can't find them on the 1851 then try the 1861 census!

As we've discussed before, its about widening the search to look for other record types which may then give you clues to lead you back (eg any marriage or burial for Hannah etc), rather than concentrating on one record type.

Once you've exhausted all those, if you still cant find them then come back and let us know everything you've tried and the search can be picked up from there.

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

EDIT: your search, not you're search - obviously !!!!

Hi John

Bearing in mind old fashioned handwriting and the fact that FMP often wrongly transcribe, I suggest that if all else fails you should try searching on *ingle

Given the age difference of the parents, might John Windle be a step-son of John Tingle?

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

Could be of this family:
GRO Births
TINGLE, HARRIET ANN mother's maiden name WINDLE
GRO Reference: 1849 J Quarter in ROTHERHAM Volume 22 Page 549

There also is a Hannah Tingle in 1839, mother Windle. You can check out the others.

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

Terry what a star, thank you, must recheck the marriage to see what it says for Ann, if she is a spinster then I reckon Jhn will be a brother.

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

update on FMP transcribed as Single, thanks heather for the tip did not think you could use wildcards on that site so something to remember in future. Ann was a spinster when she married.

The wildcard guidance is here:

Have you reported the transcription error to FMP? They are usually good at correcting them, unless there is doubt. (Unlike another well-known source)

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

If anyone has Ancestry has it been transcribed correctly on there? How would I go about telling FMP?

Re: John and Ann Tingle on 1841 and 1851 census

John

Sally has given you the link to how you tell FMP about an error.
