Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Jennifer

Might not be relevant but theres a Baptism for ;

Mark Eyre, Born 15 Aug 1821, Baptised 18 Sep 1821, Belper, Derbyshire (Wesleyan Methodist)
Father William, Mother Ann

Date fits for the Mark on the 1841 census (and its the only Mark Eyre of the right age I can find so far) - so it could be that William was married before, given that hes a bit older than Martha!

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Edit:

Their address on the Baptism record is Codnor in the Parish of Heanor, Derbyshire and Williams occupation was a Frame Work Knitter

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

There’s a mention of William’s death in the Sheffield Independent of 28 October 1848:
On Sunday, at Alderfit, aged 61, Mr William Eyre. He had been employed by Messrs. Graham, about 21 years.

Searching for this company they seemed to have the Milton Iron Works which was near Alderthwaite.

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Jennifer, There is a marriage of William Eyre to Ann Bradshaw 8 October 1810 Sutton on the Hill, Derbyshire.

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

The William Eyre who was the framework knitter might be this one in Easington in 1861 ?
Thornley Colliery - William Eyre, age 76, retired stocking weaver, born Heanor Derbyshire.
In the 1851 census he also has a son Mark with him, who was born Codnor.
That Mark was age 22 though (= birth ca 1829.)

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hello,

There is quite a lot on the web about the Eyres in Derbyshire, right back into the twelfth century: some qualified as gentry (notably the 'foresters') and others just as yeomen. Some Eyres migrated into Hallamshire and the Penistone area in the 16th century, and not many retained the status they formerly had; but I should think all the Yorkshire Eyres would have had Derbyshire roots. It's certainly an interesting family to follow.

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Geoffrey,
Thank You for the information on they Eyre family,
I seem to be still at a brick wall with my Mark Eyre 1821- 1842 & his brother Thomas Eyre 1820 I should imagine they were Baptised somewhere & who was their mother was it Martha or someone else.

I Have searched Sheffield indexers found nothing. My mother use to say when we visited Sheffield she said dad,s family lived at the back of the old police station & C&A Store also not far from the hole in the road shops.
I cannot visit the local archives in Sheffield as I now live south of Perth Australia.

It will have to be back to researching on the computer

Many Thanks
Jenny Clarke

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Jenny,

Do you have a 1911 census for your Sheffield Eyre family that we could maybe work back to
where you want to be.

Have you looked at Family Search........

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

And Hi again,

You set you problem out beautifully...

I had started looking at it and nothing was jumping out at me.

I do wonder if they were Methodists and that's why I had thought of the LDS.

I am sure our super sleuths will have another go at the problem.

Take care.

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

I was just re visiting my scribbles from yesterday.

The last four children listed on the 1841 census including your Charles were all baptised
at Old Holy Trinity, Wentworth. A new church was built in 1878.

That leaves Thos 21, Mark 29, and John 16 missing from those baptisms I checked on FreeReg
for Holy Trinity.

Maybe they have not been transcribed.

I also noted the there is a Mark Eyre who died in 1842. In Hoyland. aged 22.

FreeBMD.
Deaths Jun 1842
EYRE Mark Ecclesfield 22 108

Would Hoyland be covered by the Ecclesfield Registration district?

No further luck at finding a marriage between William and Martha. Could Thomas, Mark and John be children of Martha in a previous marriage. Just another scenario.

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Elaine.
Thank you again for the information the Mark Eyre who died in 1842 age 22 is my Mark Eyre & yes Hoyland came under Ecclesfield registration I have his death certificate & it stated William was his father who was a Puddler. They were both buried in the old church yard Wentworth.I have seen the gravestone.

In the Sheffield Independent Newspaper on his death reported on 28 Oct 1848 it states William Eyre who worked for Messers Graham for 21 Years at the Milton Iron Works the boys must have been born in the area especially John. Thomas & Mark could have come into the Sheffield area as babies after William,s wife had died.

I am thinking could William & his sons Mark, & John come from Derbyshire & possibly he was married before, My dad told me the Eyre family came from Derbyshire & my DNA says I have relatives connected to Derbyshire.

Thank You
Jenny

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Jenny,

The 1841 census says the whole family were born in county.
I see that Thomas was a cutler in that census. I can’t find him in the 1851, this could be his burial:

23 May 1844, Sheffield St Peter & Paul.
Thomas Eyre, cutler, Hammond St. Age 26.

That would put his year of birth ca 1818.
It might be interesting to get the death certificate to see who registered the death, that might give a clue.

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Heather,
Thank you for that information I have been researching Thomas Eyre why we could not find him in the 1851 census I found a Thomas Eyre from Rotherham who was in & out of prison from the York Courts

1843 3rd July Larceny 6 Months
1854 Riot & Assalt
1855 Receiving Stolen Goods 6 months
1860 6 July Larceny 4 months
1862 10 Dec Rape 10 years
1876 6 April Unlawfully Wounding 6 months
1878 4 July Assalting a Police Officer Not Guilty
Do you think this is the Thomas I am looking for.

I also found a Thomas Eyre Transported 29 June 1864 Transported on the Merchantman he got 10 years.
Let me know what you think on this.

Thank You
Jenny Clarke

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Jenny,

I found the following:

1855 stolen goods - newspaper says he was a cutlery manufacturer aged 50.
1860 larceny - newspaper report says he was a boy aged 17.
1862 rape case - the a newspaper report says that he was 21 years old.
1876 unlawful wounding - prison record says he was a police officer aged 27.
1878 assault - prison record for when he was awaiting trial at the Rotherham Sessions says he was a blade grinder aged 30.

So happily none of those would have been your Thomas as the ages were wrong.
I couldn’t turn up any extra information about the two earliest cases though.

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

PS - The record for the 1864 transportation says he’d been committed at York Assizes in December 1862.
Report in the Yorkshire Gazette says that a Thomas Eyre was in the Winter Gaol Delivery that month for rape, so that might have been the one transported.

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

Hi Heather.
Thank you so much for all your information you have found. I am disappointed none of the Thomas Eyre I had found was my family I thought I had cracked some information on Thomas you could be right on a possible on the information you found a death for him 23 May 1844 age 26.
Will look into this.

Thank You
Jenny

Re: William Eyre 1786 - 1848

At first I thought it might be the same William Eyre I have been following recently for a friend. However he was born 1767 Loversall near Doncaster. The family moved to Wadworth in the early 1800 and eventually to Sheffield Heeley around the 1850's
