Jno Swinen Swain

Jno (John?) Swain, Baptism Bradfield 25 December 1805. His parents are William Swain & Alice Swinden. Alice was still alive in 1841 Burnt Hill Bradfield. Trying to find any further info on John?

Re: Jno Swinen Swain

Sorry the title should read Jno Swinden Swain

Re: Jno Swinen Swain

Bradfield Archives has just one record for John Swain of Burnt Hill. It is an 1828 militia list. He was a labourer age 33 and was exempt from militia service. The reason for his exemption is given but I cannot make it out. It is not one of the usual reasons (poor, infirm, apprentice, lame)

Re: Jno Swinen Swain

Hi Dave. I will look at that. Thanks

Re: Jno Swinen Swain

David, I think I have worked it out.
I think the reason for exemption is "idiot"

Re: Jno Swinen Swain

Hi Dave. I did look but could not work it out, but you could be right. I note there are other lists relating to William & Henry Swain at Burnt Hill (John's brothers) but not John, so wondering if he had died or went into an institution?

Re: Jno Swinen Swain

There is a likely burial for him at St Mary Ecclesfield in 1830.

Re: Jno Swinen Swain

Dave. Can I ask were you found the info. I have logged into St Mary's Ecclesfield burial index bur cannot find a Swain, or am I looking in the wrong place. Dave
