'Spring Awakening' hit moves to Broadway

NEW YORK, July 20 (UPI) --

A production of the rock musical "Spring Awakening," about the struggles of young people, that has been selling out nightly, is moving to Broadway.

The Atlantic Theater Company production is an adaptation of Frank Wedekind's expressionistic 1891 drama -- about how parents, clergy and teachers keep young people ignorant and then punish them for being naive and aimless, playbill.com reported.

The musical, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and direction by Michael Mayer, began performances May 19 in a converted church that creates the backdrop for Judeo-Christian rules, middle-class morality and academic pressures that crush the teenagers' spirits, playbill.com said.

Grammy award nominee Sheik provides an alternative pop musical score.

The issues examined in the play, written 100 years ago, still apply -- as young people engage in problematic behavior including teen pregnancy and suicide.

The Broadway production will be produced by Ira Pittelman, Tom Hulce and Atlantic Theater Company.
