I found your website by accident (looking for Talgarth Mill and am very interested in your pages on the Evans family of Red House and the Hamer family. In fact I found your website fascinating and very informative.

I am researching my late husband’s family. Richard Evans (1802-1869) was his 3 x Great Grandfather. He lived at Red House in Trefeglwys from 1841 to his death in 1869. He was the eldest son of Richard Evans (1778-1817) of Eskerieth, and Grandson of Richard Evans (1732-1819) of Eskerieth. I know that David Evans (1762-1822), your ancestor, died at Red House in 1822. He is on my husband’s family tree because his granddaughter Sarah née Davies (1805-1859), the daughter of David’s daughter Sarah, married Richard Evans (3 x Gt Grandfather) in 1845, but she was Richard’s second wife, and Richard was her second husband. Her first husband, Edward Bennett (1804-1843) was a farmer at ‘Pant’, a farm next door to Red House. My husband’s Great Grandmother, Sarah, was born in Pant in 1849. She was illegitimate, though her mother Ann Evans later married Sarah’s father, Watkin Watkins of Llanwnog, but both Ann and Watkin died young, so my husband’s Great Grandmother was brought up by her Grandfather in Red House!

I have done a lot of research on the Evans family of Eskerieth, and I went to Trefeglwys several times and took photographs of Red House and Pant, as well as many family graves in Trefeglwys Churchyard. But I have totally failed to find a connection between David Evans of Red House and Richard Evans of Red House. Have you any ideas?

I am really intrigued to know whether your Evans families and my Evans are connected. I have written quite a detailed chapter about the Evans family of Eskerieth and can send you a copy (in ‘Word’) if you are interested. I don’t have a website. Please contact me by e-mail.

Best wishes, Maureen

I see in your Evans research that there maybe a link to a farm named Clap. My family farmed at Clap, near Trefeglwys in the mid 1800s. Evan Evans and his wife Margaret had 11 children whilst residing at Clap.
Hopefully there may be a connection.

You say:
"On the 1841 census Edward was living at Llanvorda with his father Edward aged 80, his wife Sarah aged 35, also living with them were Edward Batten aged 20 and Eliza Batten. Both Edward's occupations were shown as Surgeon and Edward Batten's occupation At Surgeon. Source: HO107; Piece 915; Book 2; Folio 8; Page 3"

But 1841 Census for Wales shows this little list, living in Gartheryr (near Llangedwyn but part of Llanrhaeadr YM parish.(HO107/1401/3)) location unspecified.
E D Bennion 45 abt 1796 Surgeon
Rose Roberts 60 abt 1781
John Edwards 25 abt 1816 MS
John Lloyd 20 abt 1821 MS
Evan Jones 15 abt 1826 MS
John Davies 15 abt 1826 MS
EdwdDavies 14 abt 1827 MS
Elizth Evans 20 abt 1821 FS
Jane Vaughan 15 abt 1826 FS
Elizth Davies 14 abt 1827 FS

Any idea why this is? Can't be in two places at once!
And what is all this MS, FS? Servants? Patients?

All guesses welcome...

Paddy
