Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: New Games Screen Layout

Hi Hannes,

You have raised some interesting points. I would like to add a few observations of my own.

Conditional moves ... this is now possible and I have played in an event with conditionals. However, shortly after the server was introduced conditionals were eliminated by ICCF Congress. Checking the current rules of play for the server you'll find this:

4) Conditional continuations
a. Conditional moves are not allowed in webserver games.

The lack of conditional moves is due to a rule, not to technical issues. I would note that I am in favor of conditionals and could never understand the reason behind eliminating them. I believe National Federation events held on the server may still use conditionals if the organizer wishes, but ICCF events are forbidden by rule to use them. Crazy, in my opinion.

Automatically scoring results with an etl (exceeded time limit) or 3b violation (use of over 40 days on a move) is sensible and I predict will come in time. This is a bit alien to historic ICCF procedures, though.

Exchanging final messages ... this is possible in a primitive form on the server, though I have noticed a bug in the new upgrade prevents this from happening as designed. Ralph's suggestion of exchanging email addresses is a good one that works right now. I personally think the server should allow exchange of messages independent of making moves. The simplist way to to allow a mailto link to each opponent, but this would violate the privacy issue of keeping user email addresses private. A more complex approach (that I prefer) is to allow the user to enter a message to be sent, then the server puts this into an email message and sends it to the opponent. The ICCF web site already does something like this for contacts, I believe. I'll be surprised if this function isn't added in a later upgrade to the server.

40 day violation notifications ... I consider this a tricky issue. The new version of the server rule is ridiculous, in my opinion, filled with mistakes and ill-conceived ideas. Users may choose to not receive email notifications and so may never receive the 35-day notification required by this poorly written rule. There is currently no way provided by the server for a player to notify his opponent that he'll be using more than 40 days, as required by the rule. Calculating the actual time used for one move is also tricky. Perhaps we'll see this rule go away if we come up with a more enlightened method of dealing with time limits and carryover of time. I think the suggestion that the time used per move be listed with moves is very good.

As for forums, I believe this is still under consideration. An ICCF forum couldn't really replace TCCMB (which isn't an official ICCF forum ... though it is common for ICCF issues to be discussed here). For instance, there are no restrictions of the type you might expect on an official forum, and people are welcome to discuss issues of other organizations or cc issues in general. We'll have to wait for official announcements about the possibilities for ICCF forums. To my knowledge, nothing has been decided. Indeed, I think it is possible that we won't see a public type of ICCF forum at all. Time will tell.
