Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Postal Chess Exceedingly Healthy - Only Declined 9 Percent Last Year

Hi Peter,

I can answer the latter part of your questions, because I am playing in Final 20.

In Final XVII most of games were postal. In Final XX 9 months after the start TD gave me exact figures: 53 by post and 52 by email. In email games only very few were played using normal 60/10 reflection time. Most players (including me) wanted to use "dead days" varying from 1 to 7 days.

I can now continue. What we can think of above figures? There are many players dissatisfied with 50/10 or 60/10, too fast for top players. On this forum I have also noticed that many GMs hope for better (read slower) reflection time. Latest of those was GM John Timm in his fine article here two days ago. My summary: What can we do if we think like John Timm (I have no more intention of playing 14 strong opponents at 50/10 email/server than I do of leaving my 16th-floor apartment via the window). We can only play by post or hope for ICCF developing a "postal alternative" on the webserver. That kind of alternative may even be a solution to the DMD, because reflection time is only 30/10 and the delay (the move becomes visible to his/her opponent) compensates the postal transmission time.

Best regards,
Pertti Lehikoinen
