Hi all,
Its that time of year again to get back in the open waters of Lough Ree in preparation for the coming seasons racing. The plan is to have our first group swim at Coosan Point on Sunday next the 15th of May @ 6pm. We are aimiming at having 2 swims per week 1 on fri evenings for intermediate and advanced and sun evenings for beginners or those who want to build their confidence in the open water. Of course both times are open to all members but to assist with any new members or beginner open water swimmers we will dedicate the sun evening to ensure safety is a priority. We have been sponsored 2 new kayaks by Seans Bar in Athlone so we want to get some pictures of as many club members down by the lake with our 2 new additions. Hoping to see you all there on sun next the 15th of May @ 6pm

Just had a peek down the road at Coosan Point and its flat calm with no wind at all...out with the wetsuits and in we go..its probably like 20 degrees in the water...ish!

We had 12 people in the water this evening at Coosan. Despite the windy conditions the swim area was sheltered and quiet calm. We all certainly felt the cold getting in, but everyone agreed that it was fine once you get going. Great to see the new members joining us.
We will be here every Sunday 6pm going forward. This is a good session for any beginners or nervous open water swimmers. Important to get used to the cold especially if you have only swam in the pool or for anyone doing Triathy next month.

Now I know the full meaning of "it takes your breath away" - but the water was calm, despite the wind and hopefully will soon get warmer.

Thanks to Marcus and Joe and others who were there to keep an eagle eye on proceedings.

hi, do you need to be a member of athlone triathlon club to join the open water swims ? or can you just pay per swim ?

Hi Ciara, yes any of the training sessions are for club members only. Club membership and Triathlon Ireland membership is essential for insurance.

Membership fee is €25 and TI associate membership €5 will allow you to train with the club.
