Laurence Shaw Bellew

Long shot … but does the name Laurence Shaw Bellew mean anything to anyone?

Would have been around early 1900’s.

Thank you

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Hi Debra,

I used FMP and there are three Laurence Bellew's on the 1901 census Not from Sheffield and NO Laurence SHAW Bellew.

Elaine in Ottawa.

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Lawrence Shaw Bellew died in Halifax in 1995. The death record says his date of birth was 30 April 1911.
I couldn’t spot a birth for him under the name Bellew though.

Possible birth Q2 1911 Huddersfield Lawrence Shaw.
Marriage 1914 Halifax - Michael Bellew to an Elizabeth Shaw,.

1921 census Halifax, Michael Bellew aged 40 born Haley Mill, Halifax, out of work mill-hand, wife “Elizzie” age 35 born Huddersfield and son Lawrence Bellew age 10 (they helpfully put his birthday 30 April!) born Huddersfield were living at No. 4 Hoylands Passage, Halifax.

A marriage 1930 Halifax - Lawrence S. Bellew to Annie Walker.

1939 register - Lawrence was listed as Larry Bellew, bricklayers labourer living 8 Bancrofts Terrace, Halifax. Record said he was married, but there was no wife with him.

Huddersfield Daily Examiner, April 9th 1975
Decree nisi granted at Bradford Divorce County Court to Lawrence Shaw Bellew of James Street, Elland, and Annie Bellew.

A possible 2nd marriage 1975 Halifax to Gertrude H. Taylor.

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Heather and ted
There are 5 public member trees on Ancestry which clearly have all you have found for Lawrence, with one exception. Heather you seem to have found the correct family in 1921.

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Correction, Heather and TERRY, sorry

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Hi all,
Thank you for your messages. Bellew had a daughter born 1915, so that takes out a few of the suspected matches.
I am led to believe he moved around the country, may possibly have been a boxer?
Thanks again

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Hi Debra

What was the name of the daughter? Have you located her in the 1921 census? Also, what is the connection to Sheffield?

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Bellew knew of his daughter but he was not named in her birth certificate. He did however leave her £25 in a trust for when she reached the age of 21 (1936). His daughter was born in Pitsmoor on Woodside Lane.

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Debra, can you please be a more specific about what you know, and particularly what you want to know.

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Hi Dave,
As my first post states- Long shot … but does the name Laurence Shaw Bellew mean anything to anyone?
There may be a chance that he could have been my great grandfather following a recent DNA test by my mother. I appreciate this will never be 100% known.
So my original question was does LS Bellew mean anything to anyone who views the forum with the hope someone may have some information about him.
The Sheffield link as already stated was a girl Lilian born 1915 at Woodside lane Pitsmoor.
Regards -
Debra

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Debra, are you saying that your mother has a dna match to a descendant of Lawrence Shaw Bellew?
Dave

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Yes there seems to be a family link

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

I can only find one Lawrence Shaw Bellew and he was born in 1911 and died in 1995. Is that the Lawrence Shaw Bellew to whom you are related?
Dave

Re: Laurence Shaw Bellew

Hi Dave,
No this is not the correct person, as his daughter was born 1915.
The name LS Bellew was sent to me by another member who had their DNA tested. There was a family link but I had never heard this name before. Do you know the name of LSB born 1911 father?
It may be that this person has no link but I needed to explore the name.
Thank you

He was birth registered as surname Shaw so he was illegitimate. His father is unknown.
