city general hospital & Fir Vale infirmary until 1967. Because of association with with having been a workhouse the registrar had a tendency to put a street address instead of the name of the hospital name.

Yes. This is a post-war map, to give the house numbers. 12 is the lowest even number shown, next to a lodge belonging to the hospital. Not clear what that building was, it may just be an admin address.
Workhouses in Sheffield were managed by a Board of Guardians.
Firvale workhouse later became City General Hospital which morphed into Northern Gen. Hospital. Ecclesall Bierlow workhouse, I believe, became Nether Edge Institution, then Nether Edge Hospital about 1929, the latter closed in 1990 and morphed into residential use.
