Prison records

Would census records cover prisons or are there prison records available. George Dronfield (grinder) born 1843 was sentenced to 10yrs in 1873 so assuming he would have still been in prison for the 1881.

Re: Prison records

Census records are designed to cover every person in England and Wales. That includes prisons, hospitals, asylums etc.
Of course some persons managed to avoid them whether by accident or design. and some records are missing
A prisoner would be entered by the prison authorities.

Re: Prison records

OK Dave, many thanks will dig to see if I can pick him up for 1881.

Re: Prison records

All UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770-1951
has a record for George Dronfield, grinder, at Pentonville. It is linked to the record for "William or James Marsh."
Both Leeds Assizes
The newspaper reports of March 1873 link the 2 offenders.

The record for Dronfield has date of discharge 15 September 1873. Died in the Hospital

Re: Prison records

Hi Terry. Many thanks. Am I right in assuming that the discharge date corresponds with his death date in the prison hospital?

Re: Prison records

Having purchased the death certificate for George Dronfield 1873 Islington London can confirm he died in prison and the certificate shows there was an inquest. Would there have been any records available for the inquest

Re: Prison records

Have you tried newspapers?
