In 1851 may 3 times great grandmother was living in Sims Croft as a lodger on poor relief.
Can anyone tell me where Sims Croft is now and whether she would have been in a workhouse or an almshouse.
I also have a grave reference for the General Cemetery. I hope to visit Sheffield soon. Can anyone advise me on how to find the grave as easily as possible. Thanks everyone.
Sims Croft no longer exists and was demolished in the late 1800s, to be replaced by flats.
A small part of Sims Street does still exist (I worked next door for many years). If you Google Sims Street Sheffield you'll see the map and Street view of the current updated flats, Croft Buildings, named after the original croft buildings.
This link may be interesting as it details the clearance of 'The Crofts' and contains a description. It doesn't mention any workhouse but there were 'lodging houses'.
You can find the Sims Croft area on these OS maps, on the LH edge of all. They show Sims Croft still standing in 1903 but by 1921 the flats on Townhead Street/Hawley Street are there and there is empty land to the north, about to be filled with a tram and bus depot.
