Most if not all of my part of the Maxfield family died in Sheffield but the information leads to different named churches or are they the same? Some are St Peter, some St Paul, some the parish church, Church Street, Bramall Lane. This is between 1687 and 1867. They all lived centrally around Bath Street/ Thomas Street. Can anyone explain where they might have been buried and what I might find today. My 7 times great grandmother was also apparently buried in Walkley in 1704. Where might that be? She was isabella Maxfield née Foster. I suppose my 2 main questions are what might I see if I went to Sheffield and what written evidence might there be? Many thanks
Tony
The Churches listed are a mix of different churches and the same (name change). If you go to our menu on the left and select Parish Records, then Historical Facts from the top of that page it will take you into a page which explains about Churches in Sheffield.
Then, Burial Records from the menu will allow you to search our current records for Burials, which will give you details taken directly from the Parish Registers, the main page has a list of all the churches we cover and you'll see the name changes.
St Pauls Church no longer exists and a lot of the burials at St Peters (Cathedral) were moved when the Supertram system was built. But, St Marys at Bramall Lane and St Marys at Walkley are still there.
The last time I went to St Mary’s Bramall Lane (admittedly a few years back) it looked like it was being used as a community centre. The gravestones had been laid flat to give a paved area which was being used for parking. Not all of the gravestones could be easily viewed, because there were cars parked on top on them. So maybe best to visit very early in the morning before the parking area fills up.
Just to add, if you find the burial records for St Marys, Walkley (Walkley Cemetery) , we have a map of the cemetery showing the Burial sections.
Accessed again from the Burial Records page and Maps/Photos at the top of the page.
Under MIs from the menu you'll find a contact for St Marys Walkley who you can contact direct and may be able to help with any photos/records of gravestone inscriptions.

At the risk of sounding daft Barry does this mean she lived in Walkley but was buried in the cathedral. Is that far as I guess they would have walked in 1700.
Thanks.
From the Burial Records page, select Maps/Photos again from the top, then select Parishes of Sheffield and Sheffield North, that opens up the maps of the Parish boundaries.
If you select the 2nd map down Sheffield Parishes, you can see the relationship of the various Church Parishes to each other. Walkley is off to the top left of St Bartholomew.
