Ancestry UK related question

Hi,
Looking at my DNA results on the Ancestry UK site and for close matches, and other matches it says either parent 1 match or parent 2 match. I have 3 close family members who I traced to my paternal side, yet it shows these 3 members as a match for both sides. I am a little confused by this, but can't seem to find out any information why this is.
If anyone can please enlighten me or maybe point me in a direction for answers.

Regards
Sarah

Re: Ancestry UK related question

Hi Sarah

From Ancestry

'If a match is related to both parents, we label them “Both sides.” This can happen if:

They’re your full siblings or their descendants.
They connect to both sides of your family through different ancestors.
They share DNA segments with both parents because both parents' ancestors come from a somewhat isolated group of people who had children with others in that group for many generations. (Learn about endogamy.)'

Re: Ancestry UK related question

Thank you.
I still find it amazing as the closest 3 matches (half sibling, 1st cousin, 2nd cousin) are all on my paternal family tree but at the same time they must be on my maternal side. It somehow seems a little strange.

Thanks
Sarah

Re: Ancestry UK related question

Hi Sarah

Have you got any matches with relatives on your mothers side?

Re: Ancestry UK related question

Yes - my matches show mainly parent 1 or parent 2..but then quite a few show both parent match. The thing is the closest family members (the ones I traced on my paternal line 4 years ago - show both parent match)

Re: Ancestry UK related question

I also notice that my cousin shares more DNA with me than my sister.

My half sister and I have the same paternal match. Our cousin matches to us both but mine is significantly higher percentile...so would I be right in thinking my maternal side are also connected to my cousin whereas my half sister's probably not?

TIA

Re: Ancestry UK related question

Hi Sarah

It's quite possible for siblings and half siblings to share very different DNA centimorgan amounts with the same relative. Including with their shared parent(s).

When DNA passes down through families and generations it passes down randomly and not 'evenly'.

So siblings/half siblings matching a close relative on the shared parent line would have different centimorgan amounts. And sometimes the difference can be quite large.
