hi everyone I just wondered if there was any issues with 1881 census has even though I still find nothing re Richard potter. I have been looking at Lucy potters nee coleman siblings
Edward coleman born 1840 spilsby but was with his family in Sheffield by 1861 his father passed in 1870 and I know he was left a little something in his father will but I cannot find on any other census
tahnkyou in advance
just making sure I am on the right track. Was Lucy born 1834 married in 1861 and died in 1882 and was her father Henry born 1792 to 1870 and her mother Mary Ann born 1805 died 1867?
yes that's her but initially I was looking for her husband but after a lot of help on here from Sheffield indexers we could not find Richard potter.
I am looking into Lucys siblings out of curiosity I know one daughter passed and another married its Edward coleman
I'm struggling to find where lucy potter was buried it would then tell us if she was a widow by then.
Think found lucy buried 1882 aged 47 and was a widow. Buried in burngreave but richard not there. Check this burial look in who was on grave and see if any connections
Have you found him on the 1871 census? I had a good look this am and couldn't spot him.
Maybe after receiving his inheritance he started travelling?????
I also checked out burials and he does not appear to have died in Sheffield.
Maybe Robert & Lucy followed Edward to start a new life.
Lucy passed in Sheffield in 1880
ive never found a death for Richard
I guess it is possible but wonder how much was left has it had to be split between 3 children
Lucy had her daughter in Sheffield 1872 she was living at 20 oborne street bright side brierlow
the death is correct I just cannot find Lucy or Richard on the 1871 census yet I know they had a daughter in 1872.i also cannot find a marriage for Lucy marrying again
Lucy named Richard on her daughter janes birth certificate
I cannot find Lucy potter, richard potter or Lucys brother Edward
Lucy and Edward had a sister ann howsham now I searched for her thinking they could have been with her but no it also through another spanner in the works because she has a nephew Edward coleman aged 10 living with her yet the Edward I would be looking for would be 31
1871 Edward Coleman was living with
John Howsam 39
Ann Howsam 40 Nee Coleman
George H Howsam 17
Nathaniel Howsam 15
John T Howsam 13
William Howsam 7
James Howsam 2
Edward Coleman 10 he was their nephew
but by 1881 living on Cottingham St they are using the surname Fletcher and he is down as their son. They absorbed him into their family.
Edwards mother was Mary J Coleman and was in Hundleby Workhouse in 1861 where a Male Coleman child was born in 1861 - I believe this to be Edward Coleman who John Howsam and his wife Ann Coleman adopted into their family.
A Mary Jane Coleman died in Sheffield in Dec qtr 1863
Henry and Mary Coleman were Mary's parents and Edwards grandparents
No idea but two brothers, surname Howsam, came to Sheffield c 1868 but they both used both surnames at different times. Some of their children were Fletcher howsam and some howsam Fletcher. Going back to spilsby where they originated from, a Nathaniel Howsam married an Ann Fletcher who died v young. She was born in spilsby but her husband was not so my guess is they were known locally as the Fletcher kids. Or the howsams were a secretive lot, perhaps owed money or tried to keep a low profile. I had someone contact me from Australia who said her dad was a Fletcher b Sheffield but said they should have been howsam. She sent me a photo of him and he had a really good likeness to my husband. I worked out which branch he fitted into.
the plot thickens has im thinking the Henry I have birth cert for Lucys child could be the William whom lived with her parents in the 1861 census has I accidentally bought a death cert for William coleman in 1865 and guess whom registered his death the one and only Richard potter he stated Williams father was John potter a bricklayer deceased
Hazel, we already dealt with this info on Nov 15 2023 in your very long POTTER thread. Here is what I said

Hazel. So we have William Coleman, the illegitimate son of Lucy, born in Spilsby in 1858/9.
He is with his Coleman grandparents in the 1861 census and his mother Lucy marries Richard Potter in Sheffield 4 months after the 1861 census. Clearly William went to live with Richard and Lucy Potter because he died age 6 in Nursery Street Sheffield in 1865. The death cert says he was registered by Richard Potter and he was the son of John Coleman deceased. That name is almost certainly an invention by Richard to avoid explaining that William was the ILLEGITIMATE son of his wife. The burial record for William says that Richard COLEMAN was his step father. That is clearly an error. His step father was Richard POTTER, who registered the birth at GRO.
Note that William Coleman died when his mother was at least 8 months pregnant with Lucy Ann so it is no surprise that her husband Richard registered the death.
Dave
PS I think from what you said about the Howsham connection means that Jane Potter was actually Martha's step-great-niece
So Edward born 1860 illegitimate of mary jane and william illegitimate of lucy. Ie mary and lucy sisters. How likely do you think richard potter is the father of both and hence when lucy found out that the reason for his vanishing at. Who registered Edwards birth?
this thread went off kilter has I was looking into Edward coleman and has I cannot find him.th least mention of him is in his fathers will
also his parents also had a child called William but he passed away in spilsby
Sorry if ive upset anyone
What we know so far and it could become another brick wall.
Edward Coleman birth reg Spilsby Lincs. Sep qtr 1840 Vol 14 Pg 24 MMN Wattam.
The last sighting of him was on the 1861 census in Sheffield.
We have three possible reasons he is NOT showing on any further census.
1. He died
2. He left England
3. He changed his name.
I have just found this on Family Search.
Name Edward Coleman
Sex Male
Father's Name Henry Coleman
Father's Sex Male
Mother's Name Mary Coleman
Mother's Sex Female
Event Type Christening
Event Date 9 Oct 1840
Event Place Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom
Event Place (Original) Spilsby Circuit, Lincoln, England
Note that it states Spilsby Circuit......He was baptised a non conformist.
Most of us have only C of E or maybe RC information which if Edward was connected to another denomination it would make it very difficult to find him.
Saying that I think we are close to putting a hold on finding anything more about him being in the Sheffield area.
