Hello Everybody,
Researching my wifes 3 times grandparents, Thomas Bishop (born about 1827 Birmingham) and his wife Susanna Bishop. All I have at the moment is the 1861 census where the family are living in the Park area of Sheffield.
Love to know a little more about the family. Althogh Thomas did not live a long life, buried age 38, on the 10 Oct 1866, Sheffield. He was an interesting character insomuch he was a musician, perhaps a busker, a bit different from our usual family occupations of coal hewer or steelworks labourer. Sadly he was born blind at birth.
Can anyone help with further information.
Regards Phil.
Do you know where he was buried and have you checked to see if any newspaper articles?
Buried in the General Cemetery, unconsecrated section.

Hello Dave,
No, flippin heck. She was a busy lass eh ? and him too hubby Thomas. From the 1861 census how would you decribe the term musician to someone who is blind ? Perhaps someone who begs and plays an instrument on the street corner. We have a right clan, another rellie is described in a later census as - a vagrant, lives by begging !!
Thanks again
Phil
I was hoping to find he was a fiddler because the Blind Fiddlers of Sheffield were reknowned, though mainly in an earlier generation.
Hugh
Blindness and music are not strangers. Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder to name but two very successful blind persons making more than an average income from their music. There is also the blind Italian opera singer whose name escapes me (age catching up with me)
Dave
Ps Susana and her many children are on the 1871 census. She was a "charwoman"
