Sarah Ann Powell burial death 1887

The above person died in the Wortley area in 1877 aged 43, her husband Joseph died in 1899 aged 56 and is buried at Ecclesfield but there is no Sarah listed as I thopught she too would have been buried there. I have foumd no trace on this site of her burial also.

Any assistance as always appreciated

John

Re: Sarah Ann Powell burial death 1887

Hi John, I’ve not found the burial (will keep looking) but in case you don’t already have it, this newspaper snippet might be about her.

Sheffield Evening Telegraph 27 October 1887

“Sudden Death at Lower Wincobank
Mrs. Powell, of Thomas street, Lower Wincobank, died very suddenly this morning. The poor woman while breakfasting, threw up her arms, gave a cry, and fell to the floor. Her children immediately ran for the neighbours, who found life extinct. Her death is attributed to heart disease. Mrs. Powell only yesterday visited her daughter in the Fever Hospital, and seemed in her usual health.”

Re: Sarah Ann Powell burial death 1887

Would the fever hospital gave been the one on crimicar lane at lodge moor. Lower wincobank is that Ecclesfield?

Only thing I can think of then is she is buried with her parents. Her maiden namexwas Hague but nit sure where they were born and buried

Re: Sarah Ann Powell burial death 1887

The fever hospital might have been the one on Winter St.
Crimicar Lane Hospital was only opened in 1902.
Looking on Google, Low Wincobank seems to be between Firth Park and Meadowhall.

I wonder them if it was tinsley church cemetery on Bawtry roadbut I have no records of that church.

Re: Sarah Ann Powell burial death 1887

I think Sarah Ann's parents are buried in separate public graves in Wardsend Cemetery, Abraham in 1867 and Mary in 1889. No sign of Sarah Ann in the Wardsend burials.

Her sister Harriet MARRIOTT is also buried in a public grave in this cemetery. (I can't find her husband Frank/Francis)

Thanks Hugh for checking. Can only think then her name is indexed wrongly.is it possible that her burial was not registered for some reason

Re: Sarah Ann Powell burial death 1887

This map of c1850 shows Low Wincobank as Nether Wincobank which was in Ecclesfield parish and the hamlet of Upper Shire Green and Wincobank. That area was not transferred to Sheffield City until Oct 1901. The true location of Meadow Hall is shown, within Kimberworth. (What we now call Meadowhall (Road) is in Brightside, where there was a churchyard later.) I have a baby from Low Wincobank buried at Brightside in 1883, but the remainder of his family is buried at Kimberworth, St Thomas.

Tinsley seems unlikely because it was then within the ancient parish of Rotherham, and communications across the Don Valley were difficult until the M1 viaduct was built. However the records are in Findmypast, Yorkshire Burials, where the parish list gives Tinsley 1712-1966.
