Dear all,
I am doing a tree for a friend and after a few years am going back to it and I am now doubting some of my findings so I was wondering if some kind soul would check to make sure i am going down the correct path
Jim Wilkin Fletcher born 1871 parents are James Fletcher and Catherine Wilkin both born 1849. I am 100% certain on this.
This is where I am now doubting myself and would like some kind soul to check my findings please in case I have gone down the wrong path. It must be 4 years sonce I last looked at this so no doubt more info will be on line of which I have not checked yet.
For James Fletcher born 1849 I have Thomas Fletcher b 1823 to 1905 and Sarah Shaw 1824 to 1898. Do you agree with this?
If NO, who do you think the parents for James are please?
If yes then this is where I think I have gone wrong fot Thomas born 1823 I have as his parents James Fletcher born 1776 and Elizabeth Dobb born 1777 and they married in 1814. What made me think this is correct I can't remember but after all these years I am now thinking that this is incorrect
Thank you in advance to all you wonderful indexers in helping me once again.
I think you have everything spot on except for Thomas Fletcher death. Name Thomas Fletcher

Wendy thank you yes thomas and sarah at city road no headstone Jim and amelia at shiregreen again no headstone but must recheck. Do you think I have the correct parents for thomas born 1823 as this is where I think I've gone wrong
Hi John,
When you start delving into the 1700's it becomes more difficult to maintain accuracy.
On Family Search (I think?) website there is a marriage for:
James Fletcher (Widower)(B:c1776)
marriage..May 30th/1814
to Elizabeth Dobb (Spinster) B:c1777). which puts them both in their late thirties.
HAPPY HUNTING:sleuth_or_spy:
Must start remembering to use family search. That's who I had as parents but was unsure if there was another james and elizabeth and say thomas born 1823 was number 1. Just need to try and find deaths then now. I've a feeling late 1830s possible one for elizabeth in bramall lane in 1833 not found a james match though yet
Hi John,
Have you checked out the death for:
Elizabeth Fletcher D:1861 June qtr/Sheffield age 88yrs.
Also check out 1861 census:
Elizabeth Fletcher (Widow)(visitor/lodger) age 89 B1772 Ireland) living w/Charles, Kate & Elizabeth Wilson at Charlotte Street.
HAPPY HUNTING:sleuth_or_spy:
Thanks folks need to check on that 1861 death because as it says 88 would be 10 years older then 1841 census yes I know its rounded down but worth a study would help if we could find death of james just wondering if indexed as Jim though.i need yo check
Hi John,
Given that James Fletcher was on the 1851 census(age76) but I have not found him on the 1861 census and he is not recorded with Elizabeth who is I believe, still alive in 1861, then the death record for a James Fletcher in the June qtr of 1853 age 89 (1764), burial St.George's. Brookhill. seems to be a good fit.
HAPPY HUNTING:sleuth_or_spy:
Ct 14 Broad Lane
James Fletcher, 76, Chelsea Pensioner, born Sheffield
Elizabeth Fletcher, wife, 74, born Belfast, Antrim Ireland
There is a Chelsea Pensioners discharge document for a James Fletcher, 2nd Battalion 84th Regiment of Foot, which says he was from Sheffield and a file cutter by trade. Had enlisted aged 34, served in the regiment for 3 years and 154 days, from 5 Oct 1812 to 6 March 1816, and was discharged due to chronic dysentery and being worn out. He was 5 feet 3 inches tall, brown hair, grey eyes, and had a fresh complexion.
Death wise, like Wendy all I could find was that burial at St Georges 30 May 1853. Address of Broad Lane tallies. Age 89 rather than 79.... could the clerk have misheard the age?
Thank you think james death possible but age wrong I reckon 79 ie born 1774 his first marriage was in 1811 to jane who then died in 1814 just before he married elizabeth. Elizabeth death 1861 also looks good.
Where did you find the burial for james please? I looked on my churchyard cd and he is not there, is St George, Brook Hill the same as Portobello St George?
ps Heather could you be more specifice please on where you found James discharge papers not exactly tech savvy when it comes to searching things like this.
In FMP go to Military section and select Regimental and Service Records. Search there for James Fletcher born 1779. There is only one answer and there are 2 pages in the document.
Heather, Yes he served 3 years 154 days in the 284th Regiment from 5th Oct 1912 to 6th March 1916. But before that he served 11yrs 214 days in the 90th Foot and before that 6yrs 334 days in the 5th ??? Battalion; a total of 21 yrs 337 days. He was discharged in Athlone where an officer recommended him for a Pension.
If those numbers are correct and he was actually 37 when he was discharged then he must have joined up at age 16
Yes I'm sorry, I'd not mentioned the other regiments because the period columns for them had been left blank.
I've just noticed there's a footnote "It is imagined from a comparison of this mans attestation with his discharge from the 5th Vetn. Battalion that he must have been 39 years of age when he was attested for the 84th regiment especially as his own ...???" I find the bottom line hard to read, maybe you or John can decipher it.
