Father's entry into Fulwood cottage homes circa (Alfred Derek Handson)

Hi
I would like to find out information about my father Alfred Derek Handson born 1937 he was a resident at Fulwood cottage homes for a long time. His entry into this home l suspect was between 1937 and 1939. I would like to know for definite his entry date and why he was put in there and by whom if this is possible it would help my research greatly. I am unsure as to holds these records and would be grateful for help or information to put me on the right path. Thank you in advance.

Re: Father's entry into Fulwood cottage homes circa (Alfred Derek Handson)

He was born in Derby, parents were not married. I think the info from various sources has been confused. Does anyone entering into the home ever find out their circumstances as to why they were in the home? Was his entry into the home 1939 or before? Forgive me for asking, l’m just not sure where you are getting your information. Thank you so much for your help it is much appreciated.

Re: Father's entry into Fulwood cottage homes circa (Alfred Derek Handson)

The birth of Alfred Derek was double registered; once as Hindson mmn Davenport and once as Davenport , mother Davenport. I assume the Hindson was the second to be registered.

Are you aware that Doris Muriel Davenport was born in Plomesgate Suffolk (near Ipswich) in 1916 and she married in Derby in 1937 Q4 to Maurice Reynolds. They are on the 1939 register in Derby with a new born (redacted) child. They had a second in 1940
So when Alfred Derek was born she was just past her 21st birthday so her parents could not be held financially responsible.

Doris Muriel Reynolds married again in 1957 to Archibald McIntyre in Ipswich (she must have divorced her first husband) and she died in Ipswich in 1987.
Presumably Doris' husband Maurice Reynolds refused to have the child so he finished up in the "orphanage". I assume Doris would have needed to contribute financially until Alfred was 15 (1952) and he would then leave the Homes and find work, apparently in South Shields.

PS, suggest you buy the 1937 marriage cert for Doris Muriel to Maurice Reynolds.Hoiw close was it to the birth of Alfred?)

Some more background info. There is a small article in the Peterborough Standard of 3 June 1938:

“ Warrant issued. Ronald Handson of 76 Harcourt Rd Sheffield was summoned by Mrs M.A. Handson for arrears on a wife maintenance order, and costs amounting to £56 1s. Mr Burrows said that the defendant had only made one payment of 12s 6d. He had offered to pay but no money had been received. As far as witness knew he was working. A warrant for defendants arrest was issued.”

An earlier article about the same maintenance order said that in May 1938 Mr Handson was living at 204 Normanton Rd, Derby. Previous articles said he’d been a furniture dealer in Ipswich and was declared bankrupt in 1929. His wife had tried to carry on a furniture business in Huntingdon but Mr Handson had drawn extensive amounts out of the business without her knowledge, had deserted her and her two boys and she was having to be supported by her mother.

Well l can honestly say you have all blew my mind with is new information about Doris and Ronald and also Doris’s Marriage to Mr Reynolds. The reason l know your information is on the right lines that l have DNA matches with all of these people and all the correct Surnames. The story sounds as if it was indeed very complicated and very difficult for all concerned. We started out many years ago try to find my father’s family. We found his two half brothers and unfortunately his father had passed. But his mother was a mystery. You have now joined the dots, l am so grateful to you awsome lot keep doing what your doing it means so much
Just to let you know l am going to travel to meet a first cousin on my Dads side for the very first time next week, and by the sounds of it l assume now he has a half sibling on my Grandmothers side born in 1940. That’s interesting too. So again that thankyou.

He actually had TWO half siblings on your Grandmother's side:

Robert M Reynolds born Q1 1939 Derby mmn Davenport (died Ipswich 2008)

Gordon F Reynolds born Q4 1940 Derby mmn Davenport (died Lincolnshire 2018)

https://www.formerchildrenshomes.org.uk/fulwood.html has some background on the Fulwood Cottage Homes. They say Sheffield Archives has records for FCH. Consider asking them to do a search for your father's record which might provide some insights about the family circumstances.
