Innocent Clan of Anston *** Membris (Anston) & Sheffield.
After seeing Jenny Innocents request for help I checked my "Innocent" line out and its ended up as a one name study. Jenny & I have brothers way back that are our link. Frank mine & Benjamin Jenny's.
BUT boy what a tangled web we weave. Two very restless nights of where these "Innocents" were taking me. LOL.
Our problem still remains with the 1861 census for George Innocent aged 49 a Grinder.
George the so called son aged 24 a cutler and the illusive Jane who states she is an Appleyard and from Scotland.
Mary Jones you have sorted out for Jenny.
This is not an easy task as so many guys called George and who seem to change their ages and occupations at the drop of a hat. LOL. BUT that's family history for you.
Re: Innocent Clan of Anston cun Mebris & Sheffield.
Hi Elaine,
Did you already see the marriage 19 May 1851 for Jane Innocent (widow, 38) and Charles Appleyard?
That Jane would have been the same age as the Jane Appleyard who was with George in 1861.
Re: Innocent Clan of Anston cun Mebris & Sheffield.
Hi Heather,
Yes saw that and worked on it....... The Jane That married Charles Appleyard was Jane Eyre.
The Jane Innocent nee Worth which is what is confusing is as follows.
Name George Innocent
Sex Male
Spouse's Name Jane Worth
Spouse's Sex Female
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 14 May 1820
Event Place Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom
Event Place (Original) Chesterfield, Derby, England
*************************************************************************************
1841 England, Census
Marcus Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding), England
First name(s) Last name Sex Age Birth year Birth place
George Innocent Male 40(42) 1801 Yorkshire, England
Jane Innocent Female 40 1801 Yorkshire?, England
Joseph Innocent Male 15 1826 Yorkshire, England
John Innocent Male 12 1829 Yorkshire, England
Elizabeth Innocent Female 10 1831 Yorkshire, England
Jane Innocent Female 8 1833 Yorkshire, England
George Innocent Male 5 1836 Yorkshire, England
Henry Innocent Male 3 1838 Yorkshire, England
Sarah Innocent Female 1 1840 Yorkshire, England
The 1861 census George was supposedly born 1812. BUT I think it was 1809 father Joseph.I have traced them back to Rossington which is very close to Anston.
This is who I believe is the one that married Jane Worth.
Name George Innocent

Father's Name George Innocent
Father's Sex Male
Mother's Name Martha
Mother's Sex Female
Event Type Christening

Any further suggestions happy to reply with my findings.
Re: Innocent Clan of Anston cun Mebris & Sheffield.
Hi Elaine
You say that Jane Eyre married Charles Appleyard, but the original image for the 1851 Appleyard marriage says that it was Jane Innocent, widow née Worth, father’s name Joseph Worth, doctor. So she was the Jane Worth who married George Innocent in Chesterfield in 1820. I agree George and Jane were the family on Marcus St in 1841 because the 2 youngest children Henry and Sarah have corresponding birth records with MMN Worth. I can’t find that Jane in 1851 though, she was not with Charles Appleyard.
Jane Eyre (spinster age 33) married George Innocent (model maker, widower aged 47) on 21 May 1857. His father was Joseph Innocent, a wood cutter.
Re: Innocent Clan of Anston cun Mebris & Sheffield.
I've just had another look at this because it suddenly struck me that the age which Jane gave when she married Charles Appleyard was rather too young, as was the stated age when she was with George in 1861.
Anyway, found her in the 1851 census at Ct 2 Garden St. FMP had transcribed the surname as Jawocent. Age 40 (or possibly 46, very hurried handwriting) working as a laundress, with children Jane (18, shop girl), George (14 coach spring maker), Henry (12 cutler) and Mary 8.
Was she was one of those ladies whose age miraculously gets younger over the years?
Her burial is on this site (11/12/1884 Burngreave aged 87 = birth ca 1797) which implies that Charles knew her correct age. In the 1881 census with Charles she gave her birthplace as Bolsover, Derbyshire.
Re: Innocent Clan of Anston cun Mebris & Sheffield.
Hi Heather,
What a fantastic find..........How did you do it??????
You can now see why I was pulling my hair out. The ages just didn't match up.
I still find it hard to see a 31 year old Charles Appleyard would marry a 53 year old lady. Who states she is 38 on the certificate. Thats 22 years difference. BUT the following census of Charles and Jane give an age difference of eight years. Jenny had also noted Bolsover as place of birth not Scotland. ???? Arrrggghh.
I had hoped that Jane the 18 year old on the 1851 census was really the person who married Charles but?????
She married a Joseph Middleton in 1852 and Jane was a witness at her Brother Henry's marriage in 1859.
So it looks as if Jenny was correct and that the age on the certificate is the red herring.
Thanks again but if you have any further insight into this problem please let me know for my one name study.
Re: Innocent Clan of Anston cun Mebris & Sheffield.
I really believe Jane just changed her ages as and when it suited her! I'd already found the marriage of Jane Innocent to Charles Appleyard in 1851. The 1861 census which has given us such a headache stated she was born in Kirkliston Scotland and I managed to find a birth for her in Kirkliston in 1799 with a father called Joseph (from Scotlands People). I also have other info regarding her sisters. I know she married in Chesterfield so perhaps at some time lived in Bolsover and that's why she put it on one of the censuses. Her burial record in 1884 does give her correct age.
It took me years to sort out the INNOCENTS as when I first started I was given the wrong line to follow. I knew George b 1837 had a father called George who was a SAWYER but the line I originally followed had another occupation for George and it never sat right with me. I eventually found the family living in Marcus St but it was the 1861 that confused me. I knew George had died in 1846 so I couldn't work out WHO George aged 49 was and HOW he was connected to my family.
I found a marriage for George to Jane Eyre in 1857 and they had a daughter Gertrude in 1859 but where are they in 1861????
Re: Innocent Clan of Anston cun Mebris & Sheffield.
Morning,
I agree with Jenny's summery of the "Innocent" dilemma.
If and I say If the Jane on the 1861 census was Jane Innocent nee WORTH her age should be 62.
And as Jenny has noted Charles Appleyard and Jane had a daughter in 1859.I dont think that would be possible with Jane Worth.
Think I have lost brain cells and hair over this entry.LOL.
Elaine.
PS. noticed this from our 1841 census index.
Appleyard, Charles of Low Hilltoft, Bradfield. Aged 21 years.
He was 31 when he married in 1851 to the so called Jane Innocent nee Worth.
Appleyard, Charles of Debtors Gaol, Scotland Street, Sheffield North. Aged 25 years.

George is a model maker from 1841 census on. His baptisms took place in 1809.
I have tentativley taken it he is the 49 year old in 1861??? who is listed as a grinder.
Some grinding from what I have read would be needed for the modelling job
I can not see he had a son George as stated on the .....1861 census.
