One of my Brick walls is driving me crazy again.Looking for Baptisms & Burials mostly.
It concerns the Bailey Family of Greasboro/Rotherham.
Joseph was born 1796 a Collier
Richard his son 1829-(1906 RH 9c 448)Lab
He marries into my Ibbotson Line in 1850. RH 22 385 at Greasboro Church
Mary Ann nee Ibbotson/Bailey of Grenoside Died Rotherham 1918.
On the 1861 census and 1871 census I have the following children with them.
Eliza Ibbotson/Bailey born June qtr 1848. Wortley 22-783. Baptised Ecclesfield 24 June 1849.
Fred Bailey Jan 29th 1852 RH 9c 366
Alfreda Bailey 1854?????
I can not find them in 1881.
Fred was the exception. He's in Ashton under Lyne Lancs
With a wife and son George J aged seven.
Back in Greasboro in 1891 with a new wife and 17 year old George.
I have tried FreeBMD,FMP,Family Search and even Ecclesfield as Mary Ann was from Grenoside with no luck.
I think its the lack of info from Greasboro Church that is my problem and I do see that RFHS have it on a CD. BUT if someone has it could they have a look at see if they are there. Please and thank you.
The Death for Richard & Mary Ann(e) are both in Rotherham but I do not know where they were buried.
So you want to know where rochard bailey and mary Anne bailey are buried richard d 1906 mary 1908 and joseph b 1796. Also where richard was in 1881. Presume you found him o. 1891 and 1901.
Yes I have some cds from rotherham will have a look later on to see if I can see anything.
Elaine, if it is Richard you are after in 1881, consider his possibility. Some of the writing is hard to make out. Richard’s age here is a bit suspect for your target. If it’s not clear to me I’ve used the Ancestry transcriber’s version.
Greasbrough
25 Church Street
Walter Ellis, head, mar, 27, coal miner & Grocer, Greasbrough
Harriet Albrector Ellis, wife, mar 27, Greasbrough
George Ellis, son, 4, Greasbrough
Richard Bayley, Lodger, Mar, 54, Colliery labourer Greasbrough
Mary H ____ [Ancestry says Harris] Bayley, wife, mar, 50, Greasbrough
Willie Ibbotson Bayley, Gr Son, 13, Under Fire Seer [Ancestry] Colliery [in another hand] Greasbrough
Willie’s occupation doesn’t make sense but it does look like Under Fire ____. It’s not Underviewer; and he would be a bit young for that I think.
“I think its the lack of info from Greasboro Church that is my problem”
If it’s the Richard Bailey - May Ann Ibbotson 25 January 1850 marriage registration you are after, it is here at image 535:

n the 1861 census and 1871 census I have the following children with them.
Eliza Ibbotson/Bailey born June qtr 1848. Wortley 22-783. Baptised Ecclesfield 24 June 1849.
Fred Bailey Jan 29th 1852 RH 9c 366
Alfreda Bailey 1854?????
The Alfreda Bailey I think fits the bill for that Harriet in 1881.. Will check it out more. BUT thanks.
Its been really helpful. The marriages I take it were performed in Rotherham like Sheffield one central place for them until 1848.
**John could you see on your Rotherham disc if there is a marriage for Joseph Bailey/Bayley and a Mary. please.
First child baptised in 1818. Thanks to GenUKI.
Their youngest child a Mary Bailey born 1840 doesn't show in the GRO index.(From the 1841 census)
I think in the early 1800's they would have to have gone to Rotherham to be married. Baptisms and Burials would have taken place at St Mary's? Greasbrough.
I had done that and nothing had showed up for the marriage. Maybe as you usually say. New specs are needed. LOL I am am after all a very senior lass.
On our transcription for the marriage I had ear marked Mary Bingley but needed conformation. Thanks.
I have the census information.
What has been throwing me was I had a burial from Sheffield Park for a Joseph Bailey born the same year etc that kept showing up on FMP. BUT with the GENUKI info and Family Search I have zeroed in on him much better.
Now to unlink all the Baileys from Sheffield Park. Arrgh. LOL.
That Bailey Family (Park) now links to my Barnes side. Another reason for the confusion.
No, Greasbrough was always within Rotherham Parish but had a chapel from an early date. Please note the spelling - only one o. Some minor boundary changes with Rawmarsh later.
(Tinsley was in Rotherham and Aldwark was a detached hamlet belonging to Ecclesfield.)
