I am looking for information about Upland Cottage ( sometimes referred to as the Uplands )on Dobbin Hill and information about a group of smaller older cottages next door 256 - 266.
Any suggestions where I can find information .
I am particularly interested in dating the properties . I have found the cottages on a 1790 map and the Uplands on an 1851 one.
I am also interested in the Walkers who worked for Banner Cross and Ford Hall and were living in the Uplands in 1851 and Clara Goodwin who was living there in 1871.
I can only suggest you having a look at our 1841 census info over to the left.
Just enter Dobbin Hill in the address box and see what comes up. There are Walkers there but as you know the 1841 census gives very little info.
As far as finding out about the actual cottages I have seen others looking for like info but I have no idea where to find it.I am sure we don't have any such info in our database etc.

A huge thank you to Heather in Holland for her detailed and informative post. There are a few things that I would like to follow up , please can you tell me where you found the information or better still send a link.
I would like to read about the break in at the cottage on the 11th of March 1854 when Joseph was at church and also see a copy of Clara's will in 1933 and the bequests to servants.
Thank you
Also I am still trying to date Upland Cottage 254 Dobbin Hill S117JG. It is clearly marked on the 1851 ordinance survey map and is not on an earlier Fairbank map of 1790.Does anyone know of the existence of earlier maps. The house was part of the Banner Cross Hall estate belonging to the Rev Bagshawe. It is a substantial building so I feel that there should be some record of it being built.
Thank you
Hi Alison,
On www.picturesheffield.com there are a number of pics of Dobbin Hill homes. They do list The Uplands at #254 but apart from the thumbnail photo, the larger photo is denied access. Also of interest on the same site, are photos of Archway Cottages at #262-266 Dobbin Hill. Ref: s06256
HAPPY HUNTING:sleuth_or_spy:
I've emailed you the newspaper items about the burglary, the contents sale and the report about Clara's will, also an extract of the probate record.
The Burgess Roll records are on this site (see LH column under "Directories")
The marriage details for Elizabeth Ann Goodwin and Mary Lief Goodwin are also on this site (see Parish Records)
The burial details for Joseph Walker, Hannah Walker, Charles Goodwin and Mary Goodwin are from a CD which I got from Sheffield FHS, and the images are online on Find My Past, as are the census records.
