Hi, Got a problem cannot find this woman Before the Marriage. She was born in Beighton, Derbyshire, Married Albert Hall q1 1903 Sheffield. Can anyone access this marriage, Perhaps it was a registry marriage? Just need the name of her father if possible. I have some ideas but need them confirming. Thanks
There is a newspaper article re a Rose Edwards who was assaulted by her husband George along with her mother a Taylor. There is also a child mentioned but no name given.
Its in the Chesterfield Chronicle. Dated 23 April 1883.
That would fit with what i asumed her father was 0liver Taylor. They are in the 1881 census she was down as being 17 and george was down as her father as 22 years old. I cannot think how she picked up the middle name of Durham. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of the article? Thanks Elaine.
There are a small number of family trees for this couple at Ancestry. Most don't have her heritage but one claims she was previously married (1880) to George Edwards and parents are Oliver Turner & Sarah Kay. You might need the 1903 marriage registration to see her status & father.
In the 1901 census at [no number] Reyn Lane are Oliver Turner head widower 72, Rose Durham (sic) daughter widow 36, & Nellie Turner, grand-daughter, 15, all born Derby Hackenthorpe.
In the next household, surnames Hall: Albert 33 head, John 28 brother, Thomas 26 brother, Walter brother 24, all born Yorks Woodhouse.
In 1911 at 28 Reyn lane are:
Albert Hall head 44 born Woodhouse, Sheffield
Rose Hall, wife 47 married 7 years, no children alive or dead, born Hackenthorpe Derbyshire
Nellie Turner, boarder [daughter struck out] 24 single born Hackenthorpe Derbyshire
Lizzie Buckley, boarder, 21 single born Swadlincote Burton Trent
Can those dots be joined up or are they coincidences?
Thanks all, I can now confirm my original thoughts about Rose, Born 1863 registered Rotherham. Married 1880 to George Edwards in Ashton under Lyne. Moved to Reyn Lane (now Spa Lane) Woodhouse. Still cannot fathom where the name Durham came from.
I suspect George ceased too be pert of her life in 1883 so the child she registered in 1886 as Mary Ellen Edwards mmn Turner was actually fathered by some other man (Durham?),
Clearly Mary Ellen became Nellie Turner by 1901.

For the record the Edwards-Turner Dunkinfield marriage 15 August 1880 record (image) is at FamilySearch:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DCT3-NGX?i=153&cc=1614792
1880 marriage George Edwards was 23
1881census (Beighton) he was 22 and born Coryton, Devon
1901 census Ebbw Vale, S Wales:
GEORGE Edwards 44 b Coryton Devon
Margaret wife
Margaret dau 12
Sarah dau 7
David son 6
All born Cridach nr Swansea.
If this is same man then he must have disappeared from Sheffield probably after the 1883 trial. Did he commit bigamy?
If he did disappear then after 7 yrs Rose would be able to have him declared officially dead, allowing her to legally marry in 1903 without committing bigamy.
GEORGE Edwards died age 50 in 1908 registered Bedwelty (Ebbw Vale)

Dave T's message: 1881census (Beighton) he was 22 and born Coryton, Devon
The place was Colyton, Devon.
The same man seems to be in Glamorgan Eglwysil in 1911 aged 54 with wife Catherine (married 8 years) with a 17 year old son David and 18 year old daughter Sarah and a couple of lodger/boarders.
