Woodhouse, Edward (of Sheffield, born ~).
Baptised August 22, 1740, by ~ at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield.
Parents name(s) are ~ & William (~).a cutler??????
Note that I question that this is a son of "our" William as he was an ag lab.
The burial in 1821 is the William born 1727 and buried At All Saints Ecclesall.
I have the tree back to 1550 at Holmesfield Dronfield BUT and its a big BUT. The last three generations it was wishful thinking on my part.
If you remember those early Dronfield registers were in a terrible state but we did have help from the Totley History Group.
Maybe we have more Woodhouse researchers lurking who have a better idea of where Edward is or if indeed he is ours.
Just a couple of ideas.. no access to pc at mo. Could Edward have not died in Ecclesall and bectherefore buried eg at the general cemetery. Let's also say date wrong too. 2. Have they transcribed surname wrong so have the for example indexed it as WooLhouse. Just a thought probably wrong.
Hi Elaine,
Thanks for that, on Ancestry there is another Edward Woodhouse but he was born in 1739 in Sprotborough married a Sarah Whittaker and buried on 24th June 1816 in Burgh Wallis.
On Find My Past there are two baptisms for Edward Woodhouse, the Sheffield Cathedral baptism original, I cannot read the father's occupation and his name is written as Edward, the other shows a baptism on 22nd August 1739 for Edwd with father being a cutler, this is a Borthwick translation and that is clearly written with his occupation as cutler but wrong year.
Hi John,
Thanks for that but have already looked at General Cemetery with no luck under anglican and non-conformist and all the Woo + even Wodehouse.
Done a search with just Ed* Wo* on all searchable websites at my disposal and still no luck, just wish someone on one of these sites would reply to my messages and put me out of my misery!
Our database holds the baptisms for the Parish Church from 1653-to Aug 13th 1752......So one would expect to find more than one Edward.
There is only one listed. However....... All Saints was a Chapelrey in that time frame and events at All Saints were also entered in the Parish Churches registers.
Woodhouse, William (, age ~, lab, residing at of Sheffield).
Married Hannah Dungworth, on January 22, 1721/2, by ~ (Banns) at
Sheffield Parish Church, Church St, Sheffield. Father's name is ~ (~).
The Parents of our "Edward" maybe.....LOL.
William is also a Lab. He died at Goole Green Farm in 1750.
Elaine.
PS. I dont have Ancestry or FMP at the moment.
** Dont know if I have found something that may have a bearing on this Edward.
Using Family Search.......
Edward Woodhouse 22 Aug 1740 at SPC. father Wm
Edward Woodhouse 22 Aug 1739 a BT. Borthwick. father Wm
Could that be where the error occurred?
I also noted this.
WOODHOUSE death 1740 son of ????? PR-138-1-7. SPC.
Hi Elaine,
Thankyou for looking. I think the Cathedral record is correct regarding the baptism, the Borthwick one only shows the date and month, not the year.
The death you found is interesting and could well be the answer, he possibly died a few weeks/months old. Unfortunately I cannot find the death, the Cathedral/Parish Church records I possess only cover burials from 1767. I've tried looking on family search but not much luck either, came across trees on My Heritage site that also have the 1821 death on - an Andrea Pilkington is the owner but since I'm not a member I can't contact her.
Just to "put the cat amongst the pigeons" I'm going to put his death down on my trees as 1740 and see what happens.
When I've time....working loads over the bank Holiday weekend I work in hospitality...I shall dust down the books I've got for SPC to see what it says about the 1740 death.

Looked for a second marriage of Wm I found this in our records.
Woodhouse, William (bachelor, age ~, Cutler, residing at of Sheffield).
Married Mary Ridge, on August 8, 1739, by ~ (Banns) at
Sheffield Parish Church, Church St, Sheffield. Father's name is ~ (~).
Married in the presence of ~.
It did state on Edwards baptismal record that his father William was a cutler.
Their first child Edward is the one baptised in 1740-1741.
Hi Heather,
I think you have more or less cracked it, thankyou. The first baptism record I looked at for Edward was illegible for father's occupation but the one shown on FMP for 1739 is quite clear and shows his occupation as cutler so that does rule out William and Hannah as his parents.
The marriage you found in 1739 for William and Mary Ridge would fit Edward's birth and his occupation fits too. According to FMP William was baptised in 1715 father's name William and Mary Ridge's baptism was in 1718, father's name Thomas a mason. I don't have either of these two in my tree so that's where the confusion has arisen. William the labourer died in Dec.1750 and Hannah his wife does appear to have died in 1740 (thought it might have been in childbirth!)
Think we might be able to put this to bed now, thankyou all for your input, it's been very helpful.
