Transcription enquiry

Hi there,

Not sure if this can be checked or not but the Barstow's below I think should be in the same section in the cemetery, I know U can look like V when transcribing, I am not sure which one it would be

BARSTOW, Millicent (Widow, age 69).
Died at 9 Midland Street; Buried on March 3, 1948 in Consecrated ground;
Grave Number 1066, Section U1 of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
Parent or Next of Kin if Available: ~. Remarks: ~.
Plot Owner: ~ ~ of ~. Page No ~

BARSTOW, Frederick (Painter & Decorator, age 67).
Died at 9 Midland St; Buried on June 11, 1946 in Consecrated ground;
Grave Number 1066, Section V1 of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.
Parent or Next of Kin if Available: ~. Remarks: ~.
Plot Owner: ~ ~ of ~. Page No 213

Re: Transcription enquiry

Just going on the grave number I think the section should be U1 because there is NO 1066 in section V1, however this still needs confirming by someone with the original registers.

John

Re: Transcription enquiry

Morning Maxine,

I have looked at Frederick and I am sure its a U2 not a V1.

Unfortunately my originals only go to 4th August 1946. Not able to check Millicent out but City Road Bereavement Services should be able to help.

Re: Transcription enquiry

Morning Maxine,

Millicent Barstow's Burial has been checked against the original and our transcription is correct.

Re: Transcription enquiry

Hi Dave,

Funny you should mention that. I had had also noticed that but thats what it says in the register. I wonder if the (1) & (2) mean something else. I had thought it might mean the order in which they were buried but looked at it again and thats not the reason.

BUT that pinpoints the section at least. (U).

Re: Transcription enquiry

FamilySearch.org has the burial record for Millicent Barstow.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9F6-LPN?i=97&cat=444385 (image 98).

The section looks like U1.

On the next line is the burial record for Amelia Doane. It also looks like U1, grave 663. That is in the burial records on this site as Section U1.

But Frederick Barstow is in V1 1066.
And in the records here for DOANE, William Aloysius in 1954 is Section U1 grave 663. Pointing us to Section U.

Image 432 has the record for DOANE, William Aloysius looks like V1 or U1, take your pick.

But on the line above Doane there is the record for Harry Dukes. That is very clearly in Section U. The U has a wee tail.

I think the Barstow and Doane burials are in section V1.

Re: Transcription enquiry

There is no plot number 1066 in section V1. section V1 graves start with a 7.

Re: Transcription enquiry

Ouch.
Either way be fairly confident they share the same plot:
Remarks in the register, seem similar, as I read them:
Frederick Barstow 1946: 9 Row Low side 18 f(rom?) near side
Millicent Barstow 1948: 9 Row L(ow?) S(ide) 18 f(rom?) near side

Re: Transcription enquiry

Afternoon Guys,

If you look at our Burial Records over to the left and there you will notice that one of the headers says "MAPS".

Look for the one for City Road.

Left hand side of the page you will see there is a section for "U" and one also for "U1. That is probably why the error was made by the recording clerk at City Road. There are two sections of "U's" as I noted above.

Sooooo husband and wife are probably in the same grave in U1.

And so ends the mystery.

Elaine.
