Transcription modiftcation - Parish Marriages

Hi Elaine, here is another query for you.

Could I point out a mistranscribed name

CALTON, Ann (Widow, age 32, ~, residing at 9 Turner St).
Married Alfred NEWBON, on December 25, 1879, by S Earnshaw (Banns) at
Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield. Father's name is Frederick Brown (Cutler).
Married in the presence of Arthur Brown (mark),Mary Maria Brown.

Alfred NEWBON should be Alfred NEWTON.
The image and transcript can be found on FMP
https://search.findmypast.com/record?id=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2FENGLYOR1D_PR-138-3-106%2F00039&parentid=GBPRS%2FYORKSHIRE%2FMAR%2F301980485%2F2

On Familysearch the citation shows as Alfred Newton

"England, Yorkshire, Parish Registers, 1538-2016", , FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:66GB-VPZT : Thu Oct 26 09:13:37 UTC 2023), Entry for Alfred Newton and Henry Newton, 25 Dec 1879.

Looking at the image on FMP it's easy to see how the error could occur with differences between the name, the signature and his fathers name.
This marriage was Alfred's second marriage, his first is already in your records

Regards
Ian

Re: Transcription modiftcation - Parish Marriages

Interesting, FreeBMD also has Alfred Newbon.

FamilySearch.org transcription has Alfred Newton.

Further confirmation of Newton surname is on the birth certificate for his daughter Florence.

As you can see this is what is in the Database.

Not a techi but I am sure its still in the memory of your computer.

Keep the page open as above and then click on the circled arrow top left hand corner.

Give it a try and see what happens. Should clear up the memory.

Hi Elaine,
It's got me baffled.
Searching on Ann Calton or Alfred Newton individually seems to work but if you then use the
Spouse Match or similar date married link, the resulting page shows Ann Calton married to Alfred NEWBON.
