1861 census Owen family

I need help again with the 1861 census!! This time I'm looking for the Owen family.

1851 census 14 Carver St

Mary Owen wid 63 Straw bonnet maker
Mary " 38 " " "
Martha " 31 " " "
Anne " 27 " " "
Arthur g/s 3

I've purchased Arthur's birth cert that states his mother was Martha, no father's name given.

I've got all the other census information, just missing the 1861.

Ann married Charles Brown in 1867 and I believe Martha remained single

Hope someone can help me again.

Jenny

Re: 1861 census Owen family

I've just checked the GRO and she was only an infant. I'm sure I found a burial for her but can't locate it now. I should always put a source and then I can go back if necessary.

Will have another look.

Re: 1861 census Owen family

Hi Jenny,

Think I am having the same problem as you.

When was the last sighting of Martha?

I have just checked our burials and the ones from the NBI Index and can not spot her.

Elaine.

PS Just noticed this.....

OWEN, Martha (of Attercliffe, born ~).
Baptised August 17, 1817, by ~ at Hill Top Chapel of Ease, Attercliffe.
Parents name(s) are Mary & John (Painter).

Is that Martha's baptism if so that would throw her age out on the 1851 census.
Just an observation.

Elaine.

Re: 1861 census Owen family

The last info I have is the 1851 census for Martha. I think I might have found Mary (mother) death in 1864 aged 73 living on Portland St.

It's Arthur who I am interested in and he marries Martha Green in 1866 living at Burgess St. He gave his father's name as John (a painter) but I've since deduced this was his grandfather!

Re: 1861 census Owen family

Yes that is the baptism for Martha. They don't make it easy for us do they.....

Re: 1861 census Owen family

LOL. The joys of Family History.

So Martha was 34 in 1851. That just might make a difference. I noted with my illegitimate grandmother she used her grandfathers name on her marriage cert. BUT then again they brought them up and thought of them as their fathers.

Take care Elaine.

Re: 1861 census Owen family

Just my views but might be nothing..If martha was 31 in 1851 she was 28 in 1848, don't you think that is old to have a child illegitamtely.

Could martha have married between 1851 and 1861?

What if in 1861 if Martha had married, Arthur was known as Arthur (Martha's married surname) but of course when he married he reverted to Owen because that is what his true name was.

John

Re: 1861 census Owen family

Hi Jenny,

I think this death looks promising.

OWEN, MARTHA 50
GRO Reference: 1867 D Quarter in SHEFFIELD Volume 09C Page 176

DOB being 1817 which matches her baptism.

Elaine.

PS.....OWEN, Martha (, died on ?, at the age of 50).
Resided at Bechin? Lane and buried on 24 Nov 1867 in ? ground;
Grave Number ?, Section ? of St Mary Cemetery, Bramall Lane.

Re: 1861 census Owen family

A family tree at Ancestry has identified

1861 census Yorkshire Sheffield West Sheffield District 08

Class: Rg 9; Piece: 3477; Folio: 54; Page: 15; GSU roll: 543138

St Thos St
Robts(?) Ct
Mary Owen (writing is awful, a great transcription) head Wid (?) 71 ___ ___ Maker(?)Born York Sheffield
Martha Do, Dau, Un, 40 ___ (?) handle maker (I think) Born York Sheffield

The Robts(?) Ct entries are between the entries for 24 & 22 St Thos Street.

You would need to review further to ensure it is your target.

Re: 1861 census Owen family

The same family tree reckons it was the 1867 death.

Thanks for the info Terry. I'll have a look and see if I can find it. I noticed Arthur wasn't in the household so I'll have to see if I can find him now.

Re: 1861 census Owen family

I use FMP and have looked through all of St Thomas Street in 1861 and still can't find the actual entry. Do you think it could have been omitted?

Re: 1861 census Owen family

Just realised that page 15 is missing! Just my luck.
