Occupations mistranscribed ?

BUTTERWORTH, William (Bachelor, age 21, Fireman, residing at Attercliffe Common).
Married Hannah HALL, on June 5, 1865, by Wm Preston Curate (Banns) at
Christ Church, Attercliffe. Father's name is Thos Butterworth (Shoemaker).
Married in the presence of Samuel Hallam (mark),Elizabeth Hallam (mark).

We thought William was only a labourer.
Lived at Grimesthorpe Sheffield.

The marriage on this site
Has him has a fireman of Attercliffe Common.
Also is father was Thomas Butterworth.
We thought he was a fork maker.
But here he is down as a shoemaker.
Do you think the occupations have been transcribed wrong ?.
If not it's new information for us.

Thanks
Mark

Re: Occupations mistranscribed ?

Have you got the correct marriage for your tree? I shall check to see if original is on a website tomorrow.

Re: Occupations mistranscribed ?

Hi Mark,

I have tried to find the Marriage on FMP and can not see it. Unfortunately I do not have the originals we used to transcribe Christ Church Attercliffe.

I can see on the 1851 & 61 census that Thomas Butterworth is a Fork Maker.

Elaine in Ottawa.

Re: Occupations mistranscribed ?

I found the marriage at FMP. I agree with Shoemaker.
William's occupation could be Fireman but it is basically an F followed by a choppy sea. It *could* be filecutter. If it is fireman the 'a' is unike the other a's written by the clerk.

If you can send me an email I will send you the image from FMP.

Re: Occupations mistranscribed ?

Hi Mark,

Finally found it on FMP..... way at the end after all the newspaper reports......

I read it as being correct.

William Butterworth (Fireman) he could be a Lab stoking the furnaces etc.
Thos Butterworth Shoemaker
Thos Hall deceased. (deced)

Hope that helps.

Elaine.

Re: Occupations mistranscribed ?

Hi Elaine

I think he worked at an ironworks at some stage. I've made a note of the info.

Thank you
Mark
