have you the marriage certificate for John Whitham and Cecelia? If so what was his age?
If you are certain that you have his correct parents and therefore he was born in 1848 was he baptised aged 3 and hence that is why Cecelia assumed he was 49 when he died.
I would like to think he is one of the same person but I think more detective work needs doing to be 100% positive
It seems in 1851 & 1861 John is with his parents and shown as being born 1849. And in 1881,1891 & 1901 with wife Cecelia he is shown as being born 1851/1850/1853. So perhaps after his parents death he was not sure of his birth date?
Not sure were Cecilia is buried as yet, but in 1911 she is in Oughtibridge with family as a widow.
Cecilia died in Mar Quarter of 1921 in the Wortley RD area but as far as I can see she was not buried in Church of Ascension unless the file I have got for this does not go up to the date in question
Having just received John Whitham's digital birth certificate. He was born to Henry Whitham & Elizabeth Howe (correct parents) 11 July 1848 Oughtibridge. I have not got his marriage certificate so cannot check what he put down for his age, so can only assume there was confusion by Cecilia with his age at death?
Sorry to be late to the conversation...... but.....
I think there are two John Whitham's
Bap. Ecclesfield 31st July 1848 parents Henry & Elizabeth Whitham
Marriage cert. Christ Church Pitsmore.
15th March 1875.
John Whitham aged **24 File Cutter of Fowler St. Father Henry.
Cecilia Newton aged 19 Fowler St. Father Francis.
DOB for John would be 1851???
BUT. Burial Burngreave.John Whitham. 30th June 1893 aged 44 DOB 1849
Headstone photo states 1901 aged 49 = 1852.
I have tried to find John on the 1871 census as I thought that might help with his age but no Luck.
Looking at the children of John & Cecilia they have an Elizabeth & a Henry.
Sooooo I think you have the right couple just leaves the age mess. Stone masons have been known to have the wrong information.
john would not be the first bridegroom to knock a couple of years off his age when he was marrying a girl 7 years his junior.
He was birth registered early in July 1848 so when he died at the end of June 1893 he would be very close to his 45th birthday.

Thanks then so the one born 1848 must be correct because the other john whithams around the 1850s were born in lancashire so he must have told porkies about age unless of course he did not know. We need now to find where cecilia was buried. I think we need to check church of ascension again for perhaps a name transcript error. Might be worth investing in her death cert to see who registered it. She could have died at the asylum in the area too
I think I'm happy with my John Whitham being born 1848 and there was some playing around with his age for whatever reason. I thank you all for your help, it greatly appreciated. Regards David
PS: Hi John. I will probably send for Cecilia's death cert, but it's not on digital copy option so will have to wait for it.
John. Need to inform you. Been updating my tree and just realised I do have details of Cecilia's burial location. She is in Birtin Cemetery Plot 296 along with her daughter Sarah (Whitham) Ellison & Sarah's husband Walter. Regards
Thanks for the update, yes delving through the old paperwork it's amazing what you find after x years. Wonder if there is a headstone and makes you wonder why not in church of ascension
