Re: William Gosling/Goslin and Sarah Birch/Birtch

Hi Cathie,

If my math is correct I have that Sarah was born 1784 making her 24 when she married. (1808)

They had five children dating from 1815- to 1827. Baptised at St Nicholas.

From that Did William marry two Sarah's. Big gap between 1808 to 1815 when Mary was born. Then again could they have been back in Tankersley at that time. Maybe more children.

Hope I am helping not hindering your research Cathie.

I agree with Moira's findings as well.
Wm Gesling Bap 13 June 1764 father George ( name of his third child 1820) in Tankersley.

Wm & Sarah's children.
Mary 1815
Ann 1817
George 1820
Wm 1824
Luke 1827.

Wm the father died 1837. So not on the 1841 census.

Cathie Turner
On the marriage records on this site, William Goslin is a bachelor when he marries Sarah Birch on 26th Dec 1808. Sarah is a spinster and they both sign with a mark.
Hi Cathie

One of the witnesses at the marriage is John Birch. So that could be a father or a brother (?). That might help in trying to track down earlier records.

Re: William Gosling/Goslin and Sarah Birch/Birtch

According to FMP there were 2 earlier children: Sarah bap 1809 and Elizabeth bap 1812.

According to the baptism referred to by Cathie, Sarah Birch was born 1781, which agrees well with her age of 69 at the 1851 census. She seems to lose 3 years in 1861 and 1871.
1781 would make her actually 27 at her marriage, 46 when last child Luke was born and 93 at death.
There was a William Gosling baptised 1861 Macclesfield, son of John Gosling Junior

Re: William Gosling/Goslin and Sarah Birch/Birtch

Hi Elaine,
I have found 2 more children besides the 5 you have found.
1) Sarah, born 1809. She marries Jonathon Ibbotson about 1828 and they have a daughter Dinah Ibbotson, who is on the 1841 census with her grandmother, as mother Sarah appears to have died sometime after the birth.
2) Elizabeth, born 1812.
3) Mary, born 1815.
4) Ann, born 1819. Something interesting is that she could well be the step grandmother of Lydia Crapper, who married the elusive George Wilson, of a previous thread.
5) George, born 1820.
6) William, born 1824, my 2xgreatgrandfather.
7) Luke, born 1827.

Re: William Gosling/Goslin and Sarah Birch/Birtch

So...... The 60 year old Sarah on the 1841 census with Mary, Luke & William is the GRANDMOTHER?I can only find one Sarah buried at St Nicholas.

Elaine.

All these names are floating around in my head as Malcolm Nunn and I transcribed St Nicholas. I don't know if you saw part of my message were I said that I can't guarantee that we got all the Baptisms & Marriages that were performed at St Nicholas as the register pages (on fiche) that I used were not in good condition. We might have to redo some of the pages again at a later date.

Re: William Gosling/Goslin and Sarah Birch/Birtch

The 60 yr old Sarah on the 1841 census is the mother, not the grandmother.

Re: William Gosling/Goslin and Sarah Birch/Birtch

Hi Elaine, Diana Ibbotson is the daughter of Sarah Ibbotson, nee Gosling, the eldest daughter of Sarah and William Gosling.

Re: William Gosling/Goslin and Sarah Birch/Birtch

Now I get the picture. That clears up the possibility of another Sarah.

Diana Ibbotson is with her grandmother Sarah Gosling on the 1841 census.

The 1851 census.
Sarah Gosling Head
Widow Female 69 1782 Farmer of 40 acres Bradfield, Yorkshire, England
Luke Gosling Son
Unmarried Male 23 1828 Farmers son at home Bradfield, Yorkshire, England
William Gosling Son
Married Male 26 1825 Farmers son at home Bradfield, Yorkshire, England
Eliza Gosling Daughter-in-law

Sarahs age seems to change quite often. LOL

Elaine.
