From all the original register pages I read I can assure you that it happens quite often.

Most were not entered alone and it was just a case of the Vicar or Priest catching up with the paperwork when able.

I think thats an excellent idea - the vicar just sitting there catching up with his paper work.
It happens here sometimes when I'm doing my paperwork!!!
