This name is a real brick wall.
I am trying to find a birth date or death date or both for this person.
The only information I have is that he married Mavis Banks in Folkstone on August29 1947. On the marriage certificate it states that he was 21. He was in the Royal Sussex Regiment. Father's name and occupation unknown. He died between 1985 and 1990. At the time of death he was living in the Parson's Cross area of Sheffield.
I have been through the deaths on Ancestry and on the GRO and nothing shows up.
I presume as father's name is unknown he is illegitimate. However he may not have been born in the Sheffield area.
Any help with finding the right path would be wonderful.
Can Sheffield Indexers work a miracle ?
If it helps tracking:
West Yorkshire, England, Electoral Registers, 1840-1962 (Ancestry)
Rother Valley 1960
4 Rotherwood Crescent
Cox George William
Cox Mavis
Also 1956. There are similar records for the years between but I haven't looked at the images.
Despite the title, I don't see any relevant records after 1960.
Thank you Terry.
I have the electoral role references which are correct. Mavis and George divorced date unknown.
Saw the death reference but unsure as MC gives age 21 and am nearly 100% sure of that as e was in army.
Thanks for the information. Not 100% that that death is the right one.
George and Mavis had 2 children Maureen born Chichester 1948 and John Rother Valley 1950.
John's birth ties in with the Thurcroft address Terry mentioned.

If you are sure he died in the Sheffield area and you are sure he died between 1985 and 1995 then that death is the only possible one. There is no other.
I do not understand why being in the army in 1947 prevents him from telling a lie about his age on his marriage!
Clearly because there is no father name on the marriage cert he was illegitimate.
There are only 3 registered illegitimate births in England and Wales for George William Cox in the 1920s. They are:
COX, GEORGE WILLIAM MCHUGH -
GRO Reference: 1922 M Quarter in SHEFFIELD Volume 09C Page 1175
COX, GEORGE WILLIAM -
GRO Reference: 1923 J Quarter in EAST PRESTON Volume 02B Page 544
COX, GEORGE WILLIAM -
GRO Reference: 1925 M Quarter in SPALDING Volume 07A Page 566
Terry pointed out that the death in 1989 had a birthday of 10th March. Birthdays are rarely wrong on death certs (though the year is frequently wrong).
The birth reg in Spalding above was very early in the quarter so can be eliminated.
The one in Sheffield in 1922 can also be eliminated. Based on the births of children registered on the same page he was born end of January.
That leaves the one in East Preston (which is in West Sussex) as the likely contender. Birth reg was early in April 1923.

Hi Dave
Thanks for reply and information.
I will look at the East Preston birth and see where it leads me.
It is always good to have other eyes on our research.
Thank you
On the marriage certificate how old did it state she was.
Have you thought he might have been younger then 21 when he married ( in 1947 did you have to be 21 to marry?) so he gave a false age to prove he could marry.
Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?
Hello Catherine
You can eliminate this child.COX, George Wm McHugh (son of Doris May, age 3 months).
Died at 141 Pond St; Buried on May 3, 1922 in Consecrated ground;
Grave Number 1, Section Q of Burngreave Cemetery, Sheffield.
Good luck with your research, Christine

You know the birth date for the 1986 death was 10th March.
If you are going to spend money on a certificate it would be more informative to order the 1923 birth cert in East Preston If the birth date was 10th March, which it most probably was, you will be certain you have the right man and you will get his mother's name.
Dave
Many thanks to all who helped with this query. George William has been sorted. Born March 10 1923 married August 29 1947 and died February 20 1986 mother Mary Elizabeth Cox father unknown.
