Hi Phil

If you copy and paste this link into your browser it will take you to the relevant page on the National Archives web site. It tells you everything you need to know about the 939 Register.

Re: 1939 register

Hi Carol,
Thank you.
I am interested in when the actual collection of information was undertaken in order to see when a person was living at the address they are listed at on the register.
Phil.

Re: 1939 register

2. When and why the Register was compiled
The 1939 Register was taken on 29 September 1939. The information was used to produce identity cards and, once rationing was introduced in January 1940, to issue ration books.

Re: 1939 register

Hi Terry, I am wondering when the occupancy of the houses were verified for the September production.

Re: 1939 register

Phil,
By definition the 1939 Register shows who was living at each address on 29th September exactly. No more, no less

Hi Dave,
Every household can not have been visited on the 29th September so information must have Ben collected from earlier visits or other sources.

Re: 1939 register

Info could not be gathered earlier. Only on the day or possibly a day or two later. The question asked was who was living in this address on 29th September. Therefore that is the only info you get. It was collected just like a census.

Hi Dave,
Thank you.
The next problem is when will they open the closed parts of the 1939 register. It was last done in 1991 and so it is about time for an update I think.

Re: 1939 register

From ANCESTRY.co.uk about their 1939 Register Records

"Images have been redacted to protect the privacy of those still alive and WE WILL BE ANNUALLY ADDING RECORDS FOR THOSE WITH BIRTHDATES OLDER THAN 100 YEARS or if a record of the death has been reported to The National Archives. Images will also be updated to reflect the opening of the record. All indexes have been created from redacted images as provided by The National Archives and as such, some indexes may not include all information as originally recorded, where it is obscured from view".

It was last updated in March 2022

Re: 1939 register

Hi Dave,
could you check me 23, Godric Road please.
I am interested in the occupation of Beatrice Pinder born 1922 died 1964.
Thank you,
Phil.

Re: 1939 register

Hi Phil

The Register is updated on a 'rolling' basis by FMP (as they are TNA's official partner) and then other sites follow from that.

As an example on 1 April this year FMP announced that they'd just added (so opened) 117,965 new records to the Register.

Re: 1939 register

Further to opening redacted records. You can use the FMP request form to open a record. To do this find the transcript page which shows the redacted record and click on the record to select it. Then in MORE OPTIONS at the top of the page select OPEN RECORD and carry out the instructions on the form that comes up. You will need to upload the death certificate for the person you believe is in the record.
Recent experience shows that if the death cert is the correct person then the record will be opened. It takes only a few days to happen
