Marriage between William Davis/Davies and Emma Robinson
A friend has asked if I can help with this problem. We are trying to find this marriage but without much success!
On the 1871 census William DAVIES is living with his wife Emma at Mason's Arms Yard in the Park district along with children Maria, Sarah, William, and Emma.
William and Emma were both born in Nottinghamshire but no place given. William died in 1897 and Emma re married.
Re: Marriage between William Davis/Davies and Emma Robinson
Hi Jenny
Are the children old enough to be on the 1861 census? What is their place of birth? That might help you decide if they were in Sheffield or Nottinghamshire in 1861.
Re: Marriage between William Davis/Davies and Emma Robinson
No they don't! I have had one of my great-great grandmas that is very flexible with her age and another family group that used a totally different surname on one of the census records.
I've just been on FreeCen and put in Emma Robinson born in Nottinghamshire. There is quite a few come up but one is living in Ecclesall Bierlow in 1861, age 19, servant. Does that age fit?
Re: Marriage between William Davis/Davies and Emma Robinson
Hi Jenny,
Boy this guy certainly stays well hidden.
All the children but Maria are registered under Davis with mmn of Robinson.
Found an extra child Thomas Dec qtr 1868 Sheff 9c 395. GRO Index.
Questions for you.
Other than the 1871 census have you found him on others?
Has your friend sent for his death cert? Sep qtr 1897 Sheff9c 375.
This could be way out in left field. From FreeBMD. I covered 1850-1897
Marriages Jun 1871
Davies William W Derby 8b 772
Robinson Emma Ellen W. Derby 8b 772
FMP other than the 1871 census is not giving what we want.
Thats my two cents worth. Others please chip in.
Elaine.

More interesting......

Grave Number 16, Section A2 of Burngreave Cemetery, Sheffield.

On the 1871 census it said that William was a chair bottom maker.
Census date was 2nd April 1871.
Re: Marriage between William Davis/Davies and Emma Robinson
probably wrong but what was Emma's birth name? could the marriage have recorded under her birth name and if she was unable to read etc she might not have noticed especially if the vicar had used her father's name thinking that was her surname. Option 2 is was Emma her middle name?
Re: Marriage between William Davis/Davies and Emma Robinson
Wow. Thanks for all the replies. The 1861 census looks promising.
William's son William b 1866 joined the Liverpool Reg in 1887 and gave his father's name as Thomas STAPLES. Found out that after William snr's death Emma "married" Thomas STEEPLES. Not sure if my friend has found the marriage. They were living together at 2ct 2h High St Lane, Park with 3 Davis children and John STEEPLES aged 8.
Don't think they have been found after 1881 though.
Re: Marriage between William Davis/Davies and Emma Robinson
Following on from Dave's find of John Staples Davis birth reg of 1873 that would indicate to me that William snr had died back in 1871 NOT the 1897 that your friend had.

Look at my added information from before.

OOPS. William's date of death was a typo...should have been 1871.
