Burial of Stillborn infants.

I was watching an episode of "Find the Midwife" last night and the subject was the burial of a stillborn child.

We have talked about this in the past. It bore out what my grandmother had told me.

Infants where often buried in with an adult burial. This happened when the infants family were unable to afford the burial. Giving the child a christian burial.

The number of stillborn children when City Road opened in 1881 was enormous.

Just a snippet.

Re: Burial of Stillborn infants.

I came across a newspaper article from 1882 about twins being buried in the same coffin, and the parents were hoping to only pay for one burial. The conclusion was that there was no legal objection to having 2 bodies in the same coffin, but that double fees would be payable unless the rules of the cemetery provided otherwise. The argument was that the fees were for burying the body, not for burying the coffin. I guess the same rule might have applied to stillborn babies. Hopefully the cemetery would have been understanding in these sort of cases.
