My 2xgreataunt, Ann Gosling married Elias Crapper, who was a widower, in 1936, when he was a widower. I have found another marriage for him in 1830, to Eliza Deakin, on this site, and again he is a widower. On another site, his probable first wife just has the first name of Mary. Does anybody have any ideas please

Could you confirm the year of the marriages please I presume you mean its 1836 for the one to Ann Gosling.

If you have some dates of births and deaths for them it couuld also assist us.

Hi John, Yes the marriage to Ann Gosling is 1836 and the previous marriage to Eliza is 1830. She dies in 1834. There was one surviving daughter from this marriage, Ellen/Ellin Crapper, who is on the 1841 census with Elias and Ann. Elias Crapper was born in 1770 and Ann was born about 1816.

Just checking - you have Elias Crapper as being born in 1770. The marriage license for the marriage of Elias Crapper and Ann Gosling in 1836 gives Elias age as 39, born in 1797 (and Ann aged 20 born in 1816)?

And that matches the ages (give or take) on the 1841/1851 census

So that Elias Crapper couldnt be the marriage to Ann Greaves in 1797 that

So, there is a marriage in Sheffield in 1819 for an Ellis Crapper to Mary Crookes (you found a Mary married to Elias?).

Mary Crapper (born about 1802) dies in 1823 in Holdworth, wife of Ellis.

So, this could easily be the 'Elias' and Mary you found reference to - so a different couple?

It could also easily by your Elias, they sound very similar and the timing/place fits?

But there does seem to be a number of both Elias and Ellis Crappers in both Sheffield and Bradfield/Holdworth - so some untangling to do!!

If you go to Parish Records over to the left and, in Baptisms search Surname Crapper and father name El*s you get 28 answers which you can sort (manually) into groups by mother name, date place and occupation. That helps clear a few things up. The one who married Mary does not look like yours.

Hi all, Sorry I had put 1770 instead of 1779. It is possible that Elias Crapper`s grandfather married Mary Swinden. It looks like back to the drawing board.

Cathie, it looks like the marriage found by Denise of Elias to Mary Crookes in 1819 and the death in 1823 of Mary Crapper was correct for the first wife of Elias.
The baptisms on here show that Elias/Ellis and Mary had 2 sons, Joseph in 1819 and Thomas in 1821, and that Elias was a MINER.
When your Elias later married Eliza then Ann he was a FARMER.
This makes them look like 2 different men. However Joseph born 1819 married in 1849 and his marriage (thanks Denise) states that his father Elias was a FARMER by that stage.. So clearly your Elias started out as a mineworker but moved over to farming after Mary died in 1823.
Incidentally the death age given at St Nicholas Bradfield states she was wife of Ellis and was 20 yrs old. So she gave birth to Joseph when she was only 16/17.

Cathie, if you have not already done so you should look at Bradfield Archives for your Elias/Ellis.
The search produces over 200 answers covering at least 3 different Elias Crappers.In particular the Militia records are for your Elias and are very informative.
