Re: Brookes Family

Archibald Brookes married Gladys Matthewman in Rotherham 1927.
I can find no children registered to this couple.
If this was him then there may be no descendants

Re: Brookes Family

Hi

It might be worth you also posting on 'Sheffield Forum'. They have a 'History and Expats' section. So it may turn up relatives/descendants (if any exist).

Re: Brookes Family

Update:

In 1939 Mary Brookes is still single, living with her parents Albert and Amy - shes an assistant school teacher. So its possible/likely she never married and had children.

There is a death for a Mary Brookes born 1898, died 1994 (may or may not be her).

If she remained a teacher, posting on Sheffield Forum as suggested may reach someone who was taught by her/remembers her and family?

Re: Brookes Family

Hi again

another update:

I've just found this article on a facebook page for RAF Beach Units

'869570 Corporal Brookes A., Balloon Operator, No. 974 R.A.F. Beach Balloon Squadron. Died 7th June 1944
Archibald Brookes, age 41 and single. was killed by a German mine which exploded while he was carrying out his balloon duties. His body could not be recovered for 13 days as the incident occurred in an extensive minefield. His grave is in Bayeux War Cemetery'

It states that this Archibald Brookes was single? This is the correct Archibald Brookes as CWGC lists his parents as Albert and Amy of Sheffield.

So either the Archibald Brookes marrying Gladys Matthewman in 1927 is correct (no way to tell without the marriage certificate) and maybe they split and he recorded himself as single - possible(?). Or we have 2 different Archibald Brookes, but this one is the correct one.

Re: Brookes Family

The Webb family tree on Ancestry have him, you could message them.

Re: Brookes Family

There were definitely 2 different Archicald Brookes. The other was born in ROTHERHAM in 1901 and is presumably the one who married Gladys Matthewman in 1927 Rotherham.
