In the pre-1858 era when probate was still under ecclesiastical jurisdiction, can anyone advise if probate for Sheffield area wills was granted at ecclesiastical courts other than the prerogative courts at York or Canterbury, or at Lichfield - any local jurisdictions? I'm trying to locate the will of John Stacy of Ballifield, Handsworth, understood to be dated 1593 and proved shortly afterwards following John's death in May 1593. My interest here is that John married Ann, widow of Thomas Scargill junior sometime after 1565 - I am led to believe the will mentions John's stepdaughter - Dionise Scargill. I have seen secondary sources citing this will but cannot find any record of it at the usual sources. The will of his brother Mahlon/Malin Stacy was registered at York a few years earlier.
