Dowling Atkins

Mary Dowling Atkins was born in Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland
19 May 1869. She married William Saunders Atkins in Athlone on
10 Dec 1888. On the Sheffield Census 1901 she is listed at 56 Earl St.
together with her son John William aged 7. Mary died on 6 Jan 1909.
William Saunders Atkins was shown as a Pvt. Royal Artillery on the
Marriage Cert. I believe they had 2 children while in Sheffield.
I think William re-married following the death of Mary.

I was hoping that someone might help with the place of burial of Mary
and maybe a photo if possible?
Mary was my grandaunt. I live in Ireland.
Thank you.
Seán Dowling.

Re: Dowling Atkins

Hello Sean

I have checked the plot that Elaine mentions but there does not appear to be a headstone,

The burial book lists this plot as a "common" grave so the other burials in that plot may not be related. It is unusual for Mary's husband to be noted as "Atkins" rather than giving his Christian name. It could be that the informant didn't know Marys husband or it could be just a admin failure to get the full details.

Have you any info from the 1911 census ?

Tony

Re: Dowling Atkins

Sean,
GRO Index has the following birth registrations.
1890 q1 in Daventry, Mary Elizabeth Atkins mmn Dowling
1892 q1 in Ecclesall Bierlow Sarah Atkins mmn Dowling
1893 q4 in Ecclesall Bierlow John William Atkins mmn DOWLER
1895 q2 in Ecclesall Bierlow Edward Herbert Atkins mmn Dowling

MARY Elizabeth and SARAH both died within 3 months of their births.

Re: Dowling Atkins

Hi,
Thank you Elaine Dave and Tony.
Elaine you are correct. When posting I forgot to edit the date of death for Mary.
My grandfather prepared a document which was passed down to me. His sister Mary's death was shown as 1909.
Dave and Tony you have added to my knowledge.
You have added another child that I was not aware of.
William Saunders Atkins is shown on the 1911 Census at 207 Eyre St. Sheffield.
He has remarried and has another family.
Two children of Mary's family are buried in St Michael's Cemetery in separate graves.
Is it possible to get a photo of Mary's grave space in City Road Cemetery?

Thank you so much for your help and adding to my knowledge.
I have been trying to find this information for years.

I will visit next time I am passing City Road.

Re: Dowling Atkins

Sean,
It looks like Mary died as a result of giving birth to another child. From GRO index:
ATKIN, VERA mmn DOWLING
GRO Reference: 1908 M Quarter in SHEFFIELD Volume 09C Page 547.

Vera is with William and his new wife Annie nee Ashton in 1911 census. William could not spell Vera (he put Veari)
