Re: J.L.COCKAYNE AND SON OWLERTON BREWERY SHEFFIELD
Hi Janette
from Google:
"Cockayne family and the Owlerton Brewery, Capel street
A brewer, David Thompson, is listed as far back as 1839 at Owlerton but whether or not he was the founder of the Owlerton Brewery is not known. What is known is that the brothers, John and William Shaw, had control of the Capel Street premises between 1845 and 1855, but by 1854 James Lomax Cockayne had assumed control. Although he managed the business well, J.L.Cockayne did not extend the tied-house estate substantially. His acquisitions, however, included some public houses that are still in existence today, e.g. the Wharnecliffe Arms at Wharnecliffe Side. Cockayne leased it as the Hunter's Tavern in 1856 but later as the Wharnecliffe Arms it became the property of A.H.Smith's Don Brewery. Today it is a Ward's house.
James Lomax Cockayne died on the llth June 1877. He was succeeded by his two sons, George Thomas and William James. These two had the running of the brewery until its closure.
The two Cockaynes acquired the following public houses steadily but surely: -
1878 Garrison Arms, Penistone Road, Sheffield. *
1879 Great Britain, John Street, Sheffield. Roscoe Arms, Henry Street, Sheffield.
It has been recorded elsewhere that Allsopp's of Burton took over Cockaynes' in 1899 but the author can find no evidence for this assertion. The Brewers' Gazette for January 1914 refers to the purchase of Cockayne's by John Smith's of Tadcaster for £96,000. The three directors of the Owlerton Brewery to convey the bulk of the tied estate to Smith's were George Thomas Cockayne, William James Cockayne and William Vibart Dixon. The brewery has been demolished.

Re: J.L.COCKAYNE AND SON OWLERTON BREWERY SHEFFIELD
Hi Denise thankyou for your reply. Was the Brewery close to were Lewis lived he lived at 82 Bamforth Street. And is there any were to get info on the people that worked there.thanks Janette
Re: J.L.COCKAYNE AND SON OWLERTON BREWERY SHEFFIELD
Hi Janette
Yes the Brewery was 2 streets away from where Lewis lived.
I would think it highly unlikley to get any detailed information on who worked there, as the Brewery changed hands several times and was eventually subsumed into the brewing giant John Smiths.
Prior to being sold to John Smiths it was acquired by Samuel Allsopp and sons ltd
The article below gives a list of Samuel Allsopp documents relating to that time, including some staff books and says where they are held - Allied Breweries Ltd Burton upon Trent. So it might be worth contacting them?
