Grave inquiry

I am looking for some graves of several of my ancestors and coming across in the burial records that they are in (General Portion) what does this mean and would there have been a head stone for them.

Re: Grave inquiry

Cemetery grounds were either consecrated or general (non consecrated) which names were you looking at and where were they buried. Yes there could be headstones it all depends how wealthy the family were.

Re: Grave inquiry

General Portion = Non Consecrated ie for Protestant non-conformists who do not require a burial site that has been previously consecrated.

The General Cemetery in Sharrow has that name because it was originally intended soley for the use of non-conformists.

Hugh, thank you for that little bit of extra info regarding the general cemetery.
